I must give you props for making that riffalicious song. Just next time, come up with a better title than Wizard Mountain. It just sounds so cheesy. I loved everything else about it too, including the vocals considering your 16.

Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion

Only listened to the track he recommend (Solitary Refinement) thus far, but I've become addicted to that song.

Did some recording today, laid down some bass tracks and a couple keyboard tracks. Angband's demo is coming along quite nicely, and this time we programmed the drums instead of relying on either: a.) a flakey drummer or b.) my subpar drumming skills. The samples we used are real, though, and I like the sound of it. The bass sound is raw and raunchy yet heavy and clear, and this time around there is a definite death metal influence creeping in (though it's still black metal). For those who don't know, in this incarnation of Angband, I'm the 6 string bassist, and it definitely functions more as a rhythm guitar than a bass, freeing the guitars to do one-note-at-a-time melodic lead-like lines.

Lifelover is a pretty cool band, but they can get very annoying...mind the intro scream, which is very loud.

I probably posted this link before...but I dont care.

Awesome. I want to, as well, but I'm so used to woodwinds that learning anything else is difficult and frustrating.

take lessons from a professional. I mean, bass is easy to learn and be functional at, but if you want to be really good, you need to practice a lot and take lessons. Lessons are a good way to get started on the instrument, and keep from forming bad habits early on.

what are the good amps and bass?

depends on what you want from your sound. find out what bassists you like play, and note a pattern. fender's always nice, though.

Idio probably knows way more about this than I, 'cause he plays bass.

Learn how to slap, fingerstyle, and pick; don't get good at one particular style at the expense of others. As well, make use of "grace" and "ghost" notes, and in a related note, do lots of hammer ons and pull offs. Even if they don't sound that great at first, it's a wonderful way to build up finger strength and technique. As well, do several styles of accompinament, such as doing arpeggios and I-IV-III or V-III-I progressions.

like techniques, easy songs to get started

Thrash is a good starter, like Sodom or early Slayer. As well, Iron Maiden is perfect, as Steve Harris writes some damn tasty but delightfully simple bass lines. Gorgoroth and Dissection work as well, or really, any band where the bass functions as a foil to the guitars instead of simply hiding behind them.

what are the good amps and bass?

As far as amps go, I use the same amp for my guitars as my bass, and that's a Crate 150W powerblock with a homemade 15" woofer/4" tweeter speaker. As far as basses go, if you want a 6 string, a Carvin is the way to go, or a Rogue if you don't have the $$ for a Carvin. If you want a 5 string, get an Ibanez with a bridge humbucker and you definitely can't go wrong there. If 4 strings are your thing, get a fender P/J bass (P/J referring to the pickup configuration; a P pickup is that split pickup you see on Fender P-basses, among other, whereas J pickups are bass single coil pickups) and you definitely will love playing it.

thanks boys.

No problem. I love spreading the joy known as music to as many people as possible.

Ghoul, I'm not really good with musical theory, so I didn't get all the stuff you said :P
I thought about getting lessons, but not private lessons for the beginning.

What are the first songs you guys learned to play at bass?

Learn musical theory. The purpose of the bass is to supply the underworkings of the chords; once you understand what each note functions as, your knowledge of the music becomes so much more clear. You've got nothing to lose by learning the basics of theory; if you've got a music theory class at your university or something, i'd recommend taking that. you can also read about theory on wikipedia.

On this topic of music theory, i have been playing guitar for around about 2 years now, and i have never been interested in learning how to read actual music, and never had the time to look into theory/learn how to read musical notes.

Anybody have any quick tips for something to look at/read whilst im not doing uni work?

Wikipedia. Music theory really isn't that hard. There are only 12 notes: A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, and Ab. And dinking around with Frooty Loops will teach you about rhythm.

Then again, I got classical piano training for 7 years.

Any help would be appreciated.

This time around, there are a few different things:

The drums are programmed, thus a lot more technical.

The bass is a fuckton heavier and plays a significant part in the music

The songs are slightly shorter and catchier

The vocals will be done by 2 people, one doing a nazgul screech and the other doing a bowels of hell growl

The riffs are a bit death metally at times

There will be mandolins, acoustic guitars, and ukuleles in the music

and

The keyboard will be restrained a bit more.

The tracklisting will be

Intro
The Unchaining
I Will Arise (song title may change)
Oggeledelse Og Undergang
Shining On (Outro)

Well, that explains a fair bit then :P But acting upon your advice, i wikipedia'd this, now im not sure if im supposed to be typing 'guitar' before music theory, which ill try now, but cheers anyway.

it also helps to know im semi-good at at playing by ear, as stated in that article.

Surprised? I've only been into metal for three years now. I got into the actual music when I was 15, so three years shouldn't be a surprise to you.

Idio, I'm listening to Beale Street to Oblivion, AND WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO THE VOCALS? I'd only ever heard Clutch's self titled album, where the vocals are fucking way different. This is why I said there was hip-hop influences in the music, because his vocals were shouts and accents and junk. Now he is singing, the music is way more bluesy, and the stoner aspect has gone away. I think this album just might be superior because of it has way more musical maturity. I didn't know Clutch would get so different :S

But I got a poem for you guys:

What's the word?
Thunderbird
How's it sold
Good and cold
What's the price
Thirty twice
What's the jive
Bird's alive
As the bird soars higher
You sink lower
It tastes like fire
And your brain hits the blower
Drink, drink, drink
Drown your sorrow
Puke in the sink
You'll sure feel it tommorrow

Oh, poetry!
Name the person who wrote this one, I bet you none of you will know it.
(This is only the first small chunk of the poem, as it is very long)

There are seven keys to the great gate,
Being eight in one and one in eight.
First, let the body of thee be still,
Bound by the cerements of will,
Corpse rigid; thus thou mayst abort
The fidget-babes that tease the thought.
Next, let the breath-rhythm be low,
Easy, regular, and slow;
So that thy being be in tune
With the great sea's Pacific swoon.
Third, let thy life be pure and calm,
Swayed softly as a windless palm.
Fourth, let the will-to-live be bound
To the one love of the profound.
Fifth, let the thought, divinely free
From sense, observe its entity.
Watch every thought that springs enhance
Hour after hour thy vigilance!
Intense and keen, turned inward, miss
No atom of analysis!
Sixth, on one thought that securely pinned
Still every whisper of the wind!
So like a flame straight and unstirred
Burn up thy being in one word!
Next, still that ecstasy, prolong
Thy meditation steep and strong,
Slaying even God, should He distract
Thy attention from the chosen act!
'AHA!'
Last, all these things in one o'erpowered,
Time that the midnight blossom flowered!
The oneness is. Yet even in this,
My son, thou shalt not do amiss
If thou restrain the expression, shoot
Thy glance to rapture's darkling root,
Discarding name, form, sight and stress
Even of this high consciousness;
Pierce to the heart! I leave thee here:
Thou art the Master. I revere
Thy radiance that rolls afar,
O Brother of the Silver Star!
