So, Gonin-Ish is pretty good avant-garde metal. kinda hard on the ears, though.

I got em as Prog Metal... but WHATEVER!
I also haven't listened to the album yet. Had it a while too.

Sounds like a perfect description of Alestorm.

I think they're listed on the archives as "extreme progressive metal" or something like that, but I'd say they're avant-garde.

Here's some off the top of my head:

The Receiving End of it All, by Streetlight Manifesto

Anna is a Stool Pigeon, by Tom Gabel. This one is especially emotional, since it's a true story.

Oh, Susquehanna!, by Defiance, Ohio.

Rejoice, by Andrew Jackson Jihad. All of their songs are really emotional to me for some reason; I guess the lyrics just resonate with me.

as far as metal songs go, I've never been able to associate with the emotions found in most metal (aggression, anger, hatred, misanthropy, etc.) so I just listen to metal for the music. Power metal usually has lyrics that are too fruity to really associate with; I'm not a Satanist so i can't associate with anti-Christianity; there's really not much emotional credibility to gorey lyrics; I'm not a Viking, and I'm only a little bit Irish, so folk metal songs of national pride are also out; I don't smoke so i can't really associate with stoner metal.

Nice. The only metal stuff I've heard from my city (or from my whole state for that matter) has been these guys. Cephalic Carnage. They're not bad, but not that great.

I've spent much of the past week listening to German black metal.

Also, I'm still waiting to hear on the Paganfest 2 tour dates. If the closest NY show is on a weekday, I probably won't be able to make it.

I have to disagree with you
There is a lot of good metal bands that you can feel emotions through the melodies and vocals.
Here, some links to stuff I like for these reasons
Blood Brothers by Iron Maiden
A New Beginning by Threat Signal
Dämmerung by Equilibrium
The Path Of Least Resistance by Scar Symmetry
Ghost Prototype II (Deus Ex Machina) by Scar Symmetry

Some people might call Threat Siganl "core", but I really do not see them that way... even with all the breakdowns. Also, for Scary Symmetry, the song The Path Of Least Resistance is one of my favorite ever written by the band... and I remember when my ex-girfriend and I broke up, I used to listen to this song a lot at this moment, and I remember that this song always gave me an emotion rush, especially the chorus.
For Equilibrium, there is one specific melody that is used quite often during the song, it's the first melody of the song, at first it's play without the guitars, but when the guitars kicks in... the melody is just getting even better. Love this song.

Really? I don't get much good stuff from Last.fm's recommendations. For Last.fm, I usually discover stuff by listening to the radio stations, but I don't bother listening to their radios often these days. I often get completely irrelevant stuff from them. :(

Quicksilver Clouds -Throes of Dawn
Most of their stuff is quite emotionally charged. From that album especially.

That's the best I could link to.

im gonna agree with these, atmospheric/progressive/folky black metal seems to win for emotional integrity for me.
as an official electric wizard fanboy i have to say supercoven is an incredibly emotional song too in the right setting. it was one of the first metal songs of its kind i ever listened to.i was blown away by the ending where jus screams out SUPERCOVEEEENNN!!! over and over again. that song is the epitomy of anguish and doomyness.
