The Touhou Project is a series of Japanese video games that currently isn't very well-known outside its native country, but is loved by many who have happened upon it. For the uninformed, here's a lovely Wikipedia article that provides a brief history of the series and its development as well as plenty of other information, including detailed explanations of certain gameplay aspects and a list of all the official Touhou games, complete with a short description of each one.

Quite a few threads about Touhou have been posted in the past, but none of them really got off the ground. Hopefully, this one will generate substantial interest, become NG's hub for all Touhou-related discussions and expose more people to the series.

So, who's up for a danmaku battle?!

It must be a claustrophobic nightmare to get out of the way with that much shit on the screen.

Most of the bullets on the screen are just for show to be honest, they're mainly there to distract you and make you slip up.

You know, I was kind of annoyed that your thread got locked over in C&C...

But yeah, I'm a pretty big Touhou fan. Though, I don't think I'm too good at it; I've only gotten a 1CC in Phantasmagoria of Flower View and Mountain of Faith. Clearing the games without continuing require a level of concentration that is very hard to maintain...

Also, I make Touhou-ish music. Please look below...

First post in this thread, based on the picture.

Is this one of those games that looks hard as hell but it really doesn't matter because the hitbox is only 5 pixels large...

If ya have something to say, PM me. I have a lot of time to spare.

How come you're best at the ones I suck at? I can't even 1CC either of them on Easy... Only non-Easy 1CC I've had was Normal mode Imperishable Night, and that was ages ago.

Clearing the games without continuing require a level of concentration that is very hard to maintain...

Somehow I get the feeling that Japanese nerds are more than human. How are they so good at everything? I haven't been able to focus on nearly anything since November 2009, aside from (for some reason) Pokémon and Disgaea DS. I read somewhere that killing 1000 youkai would make you a youkai yourself, does that apply to Japanese geeks too?

Anyway, I thought I could escape. I was on the run for 2010. But it followed me again, didn't it? Especially as I consider going back to all that weeaboo stuff, it comes here to follow me. Touhou has become inescapable, I guess.

The keys to success are knowing the hitboxes well and being able to use all or most of your bombs efficiently. Of course, it also helps to be familiar with the bullet patterns; quite a few spell cards can be cleared with relative ease if you know how they work and have developed strategies to deal with them.

Also, I make Touhou-ish music. Please look below...

Ooh, nice stuff! I faved "Instrumental Shrine Maiden"!

The games are hard as hell and they feature tiny hitboxes!

So according to this picture you see here which pattern would you say looks the most difficult to you? IMO it's a tie between 4 & 6 for Danmaku

Oh, sweet. Anyways I'm not so good at the games either. Got through Fairy Wars A1 route, MoF, IN, PCB and PoFV 1cc on Normal mode, still working on EoSD, SA and UFO but I'm pretty close to success with those. I prefer the fighting games though, they're very enjoyable and addictive for some reason.

I like them, my buddy was obsessed with them for a while and put it on my computer for me. They were pretty damn addicting, I didn't play them all that much but they were alright from what I played.

The enormous number of densely-packed bullets in the bottom-left image makes that pattern the most intimidating of the bunch for me.

I'm not big on fighting games, but I've always been curious about the ones in the Touhou series. I have yet to play them, however...

How do they stack up against the shooters graphically and musically? Do they stick exclusively to traditional fighting game conventions, or do they incorporate other gameplay elements?

I'd say graphically it's nice looking, you have some interesting effects going around and the characters look decent. The music is mostly remixes, some being amazing, some falling short, overall being okay on average. It's a 2d fighter, and they have some similarities and differences to normal fighting games. They focus more on mixing long range bullets with melee attacks to do damage. You can graze projectiles by flying or dashing. You also can create your own spellcard deck so that you can choose which moves you might want on each character.

Some characters have certain gimmicks such as Yukari being able to switch from one edge of the stage to the other or Reisen's slight invisibility on some moves. There's also weather that will change occasionally, that might put certain effects on the battlefield such as faster dashes or one that pushes characters towards and away from each other. If it sounds appealing, go try it. 12.3 is the latest fighting game, although you need 10.5 to have all the characters unlocked in 12.3.

Based on your description, they sound similar to the games in the "Super Smash Bros." series, which I used to play on a regular basis (they were the only fighting games I ever really got into). Nowadays, my gaming activities are mostly PC-based, but SSB will always have a special place in my heart.

That said, I guess I ought to give Touhou's fighting games a shot. I'll try to pick one up when my birthday rolls around in about a month.

Thanks for all the info! :)

I am rather dissapointed that you humans have disregarded this, and instead, turned your attention to outlets of enjoyment involving guns, blood, and other things to suit a man's fancy.

It is none of my concern, however. Continue with what you are doing, and stay on that side of the boundary.

Man, I remember seeing videos of this. Whoever's able to beat these games legitimately must be gods of shooting games or something, cause I can't see how they're dodging all those bullets. I can barely get through Raiden 3 on normal.......

I feel like a champ, I can 1CC all the games except UFO, Fairy Wars and Imperishable Night. (excluding the PC98, which I keep dieing on). Honestly though, despite that I can do the spells. Utsuho has to be the hardest damn boss, I can't see shit on the screen!

These games are a shit load of fun, man, no matter how much times I die/continue. Fucking amazing music, too.

Also, dem Nips draw so much awesome (and sexy!) artwork for all of the characters.

Yeah Honestly I know that the genre's been out for a while but I've been noticing that the practice curve on them is extremely difficult compared to the older games made by Psikyo

I don't imagine how anyone could get past that... they'd be wasting 20 dollars in a few minutes instantly if this was played in the arcade

sorry but these are the most unsatisfying games for me. sure its fun for a moment but if you can be that assed to find every little pit hole to get through and every form of fire then it feels more like work than a game.

That is entirely correct! However, there are 2 and a half fighting games for the series, too and a plethora of fan games based off of everything ranging from Bomberman, Castlevania, Super Mario World, and motherfucking Mahjong.

It sucks when games don't get localized because of idiots. Like with the MOTHER series and how they won't localize it because of a few minor legal issues despite the INSANE demand for it, and the Starfy series, which they thought was too Japanese yet when I played it, I barely noticed any cultural stuff (Well, in 1 & 2 anyways, there are a little more in 3 & 4, but still, other games got away with more), yet they localized Muscle March, probably one of the most Japanese things ever. And just to spite us, when they did localize the Starfy series, they localized the worst one which happens to be the FIFTH in the series, so we got screwed out of 4 much better games because of Veggie!

Seeing that announcement made me forget everything else in the world...

Youmu as a playable character? Unexpected, but completely awesome. Ghost-themed? Potential for Mima to reappear? This is all shaping up to be a really good game, and I think ZUN's going to put his best work in to this one.

Also, the return of Spell Practice, finally...
