If it weren't video games, it would be something else.
Correlation is not causation. If you're playing so many video games that they "interferes with everyday life including grades, emotions and relationships," obviously this is going to spiral downwards for you. Any factor that interferes that much in your life can result in depression/anxiety and anything that removes you from a social environment for long periods of time can result in social phobia. In other words, it's not the video games, it's the psychological addiction. And psychological addiction is a personality flaw, not a fault in video games.
They're bitching because it ties them away from more 'important' stuff.

If anything video games are one of the greatest things that have happened to me, life can be a bitch a lot of the time and it is a bitch most of that time, I've found there is no better way to take your mind off of that stuff than playing video games.
It is the greatest escape from life's bullshit.
So many teenagers do drugs and shit, that is their escape.
Now they're saying we're at risk for making a healthier decision to deal with things, or even just to enjoy ourselves, which is another reason other teenagers do drugs.

I understand that, but the problem is that these kinds of studies are used by anti-video game advocates to prove just that. For these types of things, it's important to keep context and connotation in mind.
Video games become a problem just like everything else if you can't do it in moderation.
Too much of anything is a bad thing.
Like, if it's going to prevent you from getting a job and a life outside your house, it's a problem.
