AVG , Panda , Norton and McAfee are the best.
It's not about the destination.
It's about the journey.

Linux?(Not sure if this is an Antivirus)
Not anti-virus, but it is a virus-resistant operating system.
McAfee?
Trend Micro?
Don't use either of these.

Virus resistant in that nobody writes viruses for Linux because nobody fucking uses Linux.

I wasn't aware that "nobody" referred to about half of all servers on Earth and 91.8% of the world's top 500 supercomputers.

Two to choose from: ESET for efficiency, Kaspersky for power.
Also, it's completely unnecessary not to have MBAM installed, and then one can also indulge in the online scanners that many of the listed AVs offer for free.

Avast works well, but takes quite a bit a resources, so it may not be the best for old computers.
Panda is right up there with Avast, and it takes almost no resources. It's also very user friendly.
MalWareBytes works pretty good from what I've read, but the free version doesn't have an active guards like Panda and Avast do.

The things that you need to consider about Norton and McAfee:
Firstly, they aren't free. You subscribe to it, that's all. If you quit paying, you quit updating.
Secondly, they nag nag nag. They nag you about updating, they nag you about potential offers, they're generally a pain in the ass.
Thirdly, they are packaged with a lot of computers, meaning they are used by a lot of people. The major downside to this is, if you're designing a virus, aren't you going to design it to exploit the vulnerabilities in the most widely used antivirus programs instead of third-party ones?
I'm not really qualified to speak on the more technical aspects of the software, so I won't. I will also say I wouldn't listen to anyone who doesn't provide a good reason, because people seem to develop a bizarre fan-boy mentality about these things.

Antivirus software is all a scam. It does an impressive job of making itself look like it is working hard for you, but in reality they don't do jack shit.

...What?
Years back when I used to use Limewire, I would scan every file I downloaded. And I caught a lot of virus' thanks to my FREE Antivirus.
How in the hell is it a scam?

It depends on what your needs are. Kaspersky is the best if you have hundreds of computers off several different domains and you need to have fantastic automation tools, updates, and an administration server. Eset is a close second. They're also fantastic for personal use.
The lesser Antivirus programs (such as AVG, Norton, Mcaffee, etc.) will be a pain in the ass constantly but they will probably get the job done for personal use.
Microsoft Security essentials is a damn solid program, however. I would get that, the freeness of it helps.

I use avast. It's free, and it's worked pretty damn well for me so far. I used to have Norton, but the only thing it would ever detect was a tracking cookie.

You're welcome, by the way.
Avast works fairly well for me, although I'm open to suggestions, as I am with almost anything.
