Hey guys I'm planning on making a stop motion film (not claymation,) and I was wondering how I would go about animating it. I figured all rules of animation go with it as well as traditional but I'm wondering if I would use the same framerate.

Thanks.

I GUESS NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO ANIMATE STOP MOTION.

vigorous animation tests initiate.

that wont get you good feedback...

in any case, it works just as regular animation as the guy above me said, you shouldnt have much trouble in a stop motion if you know how to animate

I'm not talking about traditional animation, I'm talking about animating with wireframe models.

oh well, like I said, VIGOROUS ANIMATION TESTS INITIATE!

Well, when you said 'wire' I can assume you're not using legos, so I think I can help a little.

You must first build a solid puppet. If you can anchor the puppet to the ground on a single foot while holding a pose, the work is 70% done.. animation wise.

You're right about "I figured all rules of animation go with it as well as traditional". Glad you'll be keeping this in mind, it will make for a better animation.

"I'm wondering if I would use the same framerate". This could mean anything, honestly. You could still work at 24fps, shooting on twos (thats holding a frame twice as long. fps will look like 12, but be 24. reserve fast 24 for fast motions)
You could shoot at 12fps and skip all that. You could work at 18fps (which is what I did) Looks good too. Adjust the framerate as you go, that's all I can say because this sounds like a personal preference.

Stop motion is unique in that you only have one take. Example: you shoot a walk cycle and it moves too fast. You slow the rate and it doesn't look good and the only solution is to insert some inbetweens. Unless you're a pro photoshoper, you have to shoot again. Pro tip: Shoot more than you need. You can always take out frames in post.

I think I addressed your inquires..

Good luck,
-mm
