Why is it physically impossible to literally pick yourself up?

I think we can pull our legs up above our head in a standing position but I think the body knows if you tried to do that you would just fall down so it stops you.

you could propel your whole body mass into the air if your arms were impossibly strong, it's just that gravity would pull you back down quickly; the arm doing the 'picking up' comes down with gravity too at the same velocity, so there is nothing for the body to hang from and you end up planted on your ass
