Why Was I Banned From Audio Portal! 2011-01-09 01:27:01 Reply

Alright so I submitted a song/loop that was 100% mine, no bad words, no...anything, really that was bad! I was going to submit another but after clicking the submit button, a window pops up and says that I have been banned from submitting to the audio portal! So now I'm like, WTF! Anyone have any, ANY ideas why this could've happened, pm me please, thanks!

I'm not the mod that banned you but lets take a good look at what you submitted...

I made this in audacity and it sucks, so don't say it does...I know. I was soooo bored that I decided to make this, so enjoy.

First off, we audio mods can only ban users as they're uploading their first song. If you put some sort of effort into your first song it will be approved easily and then you can submit willy nilly. Your song though was just a speed up acapella of you diddling the tetris theme. That's spam man. A lot of copyrighted material gets through the audio portal and I typically ban first time submitters who post junk like that under the premise that you don't know what you're doing and the next song you upload could be Lady Gaga. You can always create a new account and try again later but please put some effort into your first song before you just throw this kind of crap in our faces.

As for video game music, that's grey area. You're allowed to remix the music but it can't just be something as minimal as a midi rip. What's funny about your song is that it's not a remix at all. Again, it's just you badly singing the tetris theme sped up.

One last thing, for any future problems you have PM a mod instead of making a thread about it. This is another good example of spam. As far as I'm concerned there was never anything you brought to this thread that was worth bringing to the newgrounds audio community. Have a good day.

I would like to elaborate on this for a moment.

Many people use the word 'remix' for 'cover'. I actuality, a remix uses samples from the original. If said original is copyrighted, it is not allowed to submit this on newgrounds (because of the copyrighted samples).

However, you can cover video game songs (or any song you like), so long as you recreate everything by yourself, meaning containing no samples of the copyrighted original.

And there's anoter thing Quarl mentioned: midirips. You can cover a whole song, programming synths and all the like. But don't just grab a midi file and slap your own instruments on it. This requires pretty much no effort from your side, and is this not seen as your own original work; hence why it lands you a ban.

I heavily encourage everyone to write fully original pieces. Songs they come up with themselves, no covers and such. It's good for your creativity, and it makes the audio portal a more interesting place to visit.
