To be honest if the mix is clipping just lower the master fader - if you're happy with the way everything sounds but clipping is an issue just lower the overall volume of the track. People can turn their stereos up loud if it's too quite for them.

Don't take this overall thread's moral as being to avoid compression and limiting but see them as a double edged sword. Inconsistent volume levels can be helped alot with some soft compression or volume fader automation. Limiting can help if there's a particular snare hit that was so much louder than the others that it pretty much always clips. But remember that compression also brings in alot of noise - I've had metronomes and studio chatter (not my stems!) come up in a drum mix when trying to compress it.
