the entire purpose here is to be ENERGY fileld - your song has to get you pumping.. thing like.. oldschool sogns, how they were just action packed, think old paragonx9 sogns, stuff liek that. oldschoolm tons of energy, as you pew pew pew millions of enemies

So this contest is limiting entries to a specific, techno genre? Well, that doesn't mean I can't mix some heavy ambience in there for extra atmosphere. I'm going to make a song regardless, I want to see if I can create a retro space ambient song.

no i want oldschool - I want you to bring back the old space game like music that anyone in their mid to late 20s enjoyed as a child, and the rest of you enjoyed through emulators or through your siblings.

Paragonx9 just happens to capture that in a more modern setting.

Hey, the new NAC is up, and it's video game music!

I'll be sure to whip up something cash for this.

Sorry about the double post, but I have a question.

I have a really old song of mine (never submitted) that was space-themed. Could I possibly remix that for the contest?

I believe Chronamut made that clear already...

At 2/2/11 09:40 AM, Chronamut wrote: NO REMIXING though, has to be original.

And might I re-iterate, Has to be material newly submitted for this contest

ALSO TAKE NOTE: All songs have to be submitted between and including the days of Feb 2nd and Feb 20th.
During the January NAC, songs WERE dropped because they had been submitted to NG prior to specified submission time-frame.

My boredom gets the best of me, and I feel as if I am a little late to the party on the last NAC.

Alrighty, no problem. I've already started on something pretty good for this contest.

Additional clarifications for the Space Game NAC have been posted. Please check there.

I'm also keeping a running list of the competitors and their entries HERE. You are welcome to check there instead as the entry thread may get cluttered in the future.

Good luck everyone!

Does the quality of the song have to sound like it was made during that era? Like does it have to be 8-64 bit or can it sound like something a DJ today would produce?

Take a listen at some of the samples provided. I believe it represents a fair spectrum of acceptable styles.

quality of original 8-bit sounds were pure and sometiems grainy - and just hit your ears the perfect way blaring out of your soundboard. We want to emulate that perfect oldschool feel - so the older you can make it sound, the better.

also we'd also prefer 8-bit drums if ya can - but that all goes under the adcade bonus.

Also I would liek to announce that XBrav and Evil-Dog have agreed to judge this contest - If I can get any other judges I will let you know. Xbrav has been making vg music for as long as I have and thus I have high confidence in his knowledge of vg, and Evil-Dog has actually been making music LONGER than me and well.. is pushing 30 and has a good memory of oldschool music shit, as he and I both grew up in that era.

Ooh, okay, now you've piqued my interest, as I'm working on an 8-bit soundtrack for someone, I'd love to have a go at this.

Maybe Chronamut dug him out of his grave and we're being judged by Zombie XBrav.

I don't know about you, but that sounds intriguing. Imagine having your song reviewed from the perspective of the undead?

most of the reviews are now posted in the january results thread. And no XBrav is not dead - he submits sporadically.

I managed to dredge up another ancient user - DJ-Draconum - now most of you won't even rememebr him but he used to be on par with paragonx9 in 2003 when he was activeo n the site - now due to his tiem constraints he doesn't know whether he will submit or judge. So I am putting him down as a MAYBE for both. I want to sorta recuit the highest calibre of judges on the site, as I feel it is only fair for you guys to get reviews from the people on the site that have gone on to be successful in some way or other, and he's gotten pretty good, releasing albums and whatnot now.

Also funny story, I was gonig to run a tracker secondary NAC this month to coincide with the main NAC but then realized - there really is no way to tell if the song submitted has been stolen, as billion of tracker files exist out there - so I scrapped it - still it would have been a cool contest- make a song in a tracker - probably wouldn't have gotten many entries though.

got another judge for the february NAC:

Realmguys

Realmguys was my rival in the vg portal - older than me and very good at vg. He will make a good addition.

That makes me, xbrav, evil-dog, possibly dj-draconum and realmguys.

that should be good for now :)
