And what kind of game do you have in mind?
Action, fantasy, sports...? Depending on that a writer can start popping out ideas for a game.

Well, because you didn't specify I'll just put out a couple of ideas. When the type of game is specified, it just makes it so much easier to use your brain (less short circuiting.) Also, some types of games like fighting games or platformers aren't really story appropriate, but that doesn't mean they are bad, they just focus on the gameplay. Here are some of my ideas:
A fantasy puzzle game, I know its been done but it could be interesting.
An honest to goodness fantasy rpg. A lot of flash rpgs I've seen tend to use an rpg format in a modern setting, for example: instead of magic their is explosives or normal abilities. It's not that these are bad, some of them are quite fun. It's just that I haven't seen many attempts at a flash fantasy rpg like final fantasy. I realize it would be a tremendous task, but wouldn't it be awesome?
An adventure game features aspects of platformers, rpgs, puzzles, and whatever else that can be put in the blender. Basically, a genre breaker.
I would love to share with you specific stories for games like these or even write for your game. If you don't like any of these ideas, I have more if you are even moderately interested.

I agree with Gangstercake that maybe a Final Fantasy Style RPG should be the goal. But maybe one with MP for using magic, and SP for using skills. This way, magic would be magic, and skills would be skills. So characters would be able to use both, some just magic, some just skills. I could write up a draft in no time for the story and the characters. If it sounds good to you, I'd be glad to get started on it, in the mix with the other projects that I'm working on.

I disagree.
If there's a story-game genre that's been beaten to death, it's the "long, epic, magical RPG", i.e. Final Fantasy, WoW, etc. Unless it's a shot from left field, it's going to be boring and cliche.
Instead, I suggest something more narrative, like an adventure game. There's more room for originally there.

Maybe I should have clarified that I meant gameplay style, not story style. The story would have to be something crazy and weird, but also very fresh and funny. I wouldn't try to write a FF type story ever, too much needless drama.

Ok, I'm gonna step in here. Just because an idea is overused, doesn't mean that someone can't make it excellent. The fantasy rpg genre is still one of the most popular. Also, it was just an idea for someone else, it's their decision.
