Looking Back, Moving Forward Dec. 31st, 2010 @ 11:17 AM Reply

With 2010 coming to a close, it's time to reflect on where we've been, where we're going, and what resolutions we want to set for the coming year.

So what DID Newgrounds accomplish this year?

There were all the usual events... Pico Day, Madness Day, Clock Day, Calendar Art Contest, Halloween and the Treasure Hunt.

We had some new events, such as the NG Game Jam, Flixel February and Robot Day.

We dedicated an entire day to Kevin Bacon.

The first floor of the office was turned into an event space in time for Pico Day and the annual awards.

Newgrounds partnered with Clickteam to present The Games Factory 2 Newgrounds edition, free software that lets non-programmers make their own games and post them to NG! Check out that page for examples.

We collectively raised $15k to fund Nathan's documentary about Newgrounds and the evolution of on-line entertainment. Check out the teaser!

The NG Wiki was launched, with the goal of getting all the site documentation into one manageable place and expand on it.

We saved Blizzard the Dog.

Luis travelled all over the world for NG meet-ups.

To top it all off, Time ranked us among the 50 Best Websites of 2010.

Behind the scenes we've had large-scale projects in progress since the summer of 2009, namely the upcoming site redesign and accompanying features. To prepare, we've also been working with a tireless team of icon and genre mods to get over 188,000 games and movies ready for the new layout.

At the moment over 50,000 submissions are ready with 140x90 thumbnails and every submission with more than 80,000 views has genre info in place. With the help of the icon and genre mods, we'll keep pushing those numbers closer to the goal... EVERYTHING. You can help too by updating your old submissions if you haven't already!

Overall 2010 was a quiet year but that quietness will pay off in 2011... Just wait and see!

Not to mention Bryce Milburn's NG Photobook and Nathan's documentary are both slated for release in 2011! And maybe BattleBlock Theater?

How do you feel about this past year on Newgrounds? We can talk about feature requests later - what would you like to see from the COMMUNITY in 2011, in terms of collaboration, events, projects, competitions, themes, etc.? And what are your own personal resolutions?

I'm hoping to see more people step out of their comfort zone with new, untested ideas and platforms. We should all take a step back from what we've been doing and be ready to learn and try new things to advance ourselves and the whole creatively. I would also like to see more people turn to each other for support and assets; more programmer / artist relationships, more integration of music from the Audio Portal, more movies made by multiple artists, musicians, voice actors and writers.

Newgrounds has been the bleeding edge of on-line collaboration since we launched the Audio Portal and Co-Author system in 2003, and while the complete vision continues to take longer than anticipated, we can still keep moving forward as a community while the features continue to evolve.

As for personal resolutions... I need to finish my current game with JohnnyUtah but my first priority is to keep focus on the completion of the redesign and the immediate and future post-redesign steps we will be taking. I also want to solicit community input on some post-redesign features that won't be so top-secret, so expect posts about those in January.

Have a Happy New Year and seeya in 2011!

The second NG Game Jam is just wrapping up so go play some games.

This is the game JohnnyUtah and I have been working on.

Been one of my best years on newgrounds.
In the comming year, I plan to pick flash back up. Get better at art, hopefully get my first Front Page. And I intend to catch tons of art thieves and hit a thousand art reviews.
I look forward to Pico day and Madness day both.
And I hope that the Art Review system gets fixed
Awesome job this year, everyone

It's been an exciting year on Newgrounds. I wouldn't say it was 'quiet'.

50,000 submissions have an icon now you say? Damn, still a lot needs be done there I guess. I should help out more then I've done in the past few months. There's one New Years resolution.

Anyway, I hope Newgrounds will keep on growing and I think it's a good idea to strive for more collaboration between artists. I'm also looking forward to the redesign and I'm curious about the new features the site will have.

Same here. I may have done a lot already but I've been absent from icon/genre modding for a while now. With work schedules and forum modding, it hasn't been easy to manage time. I'm sure what I've done so far has been a great help to the site but I feel I should do more.

As for NG in 2010, I feel it's been a really good year. Hell, this is probably my best year on NG yet. With helping the site in some sections and attending the London meet, I've never enjoyed the site this much before. Here's hoping 2011 will be another great year.

This was a really good year for me on newgrounds. Sadly, i didn't get my ass in gear fast enough to release something this year, but i did get involved with the Unofficial NG Radio Chat. I still pop on from time to time, but the chat has sadly died down quite a bit. I think PoderOdunk did an amazing job make the chat rock solid against spammers and hackers and the like, and i hope the Official NG Chat has learned something from watching Poder's chat. (also i hope mods have get a chance to keep their mod status in the new chat...)

The only negative thing i can say about NG in the past year is that it has become Adgrounds. I use two browsers now; one with adblock to enjoy ng and one without adblock to make ng money. I realize this is a necessary evil, but it is still an eyesore to see exploding ads on the left and right of the screen. Less is more, ok ad design people? Remember when combat arms was the ad? I actually checked that out because it sounded fun. Imagine that, a product that sells because of value and not targeted advertising!

Thank you for keeping newgrounds running for another year!

Also, Tom you should name your baby Sir Lord Master of Time and Space Ph.D.

I know i'd certainly like to write/storyboard/voice/sound a flash animation and have someone else animate the final product. As someone who's does everything by himself, it'd certainly be a load off to have someone else do the part I suck at.

I guess its just hard to get myself to trust other anonymous people to pull through, or worry that they'll do things in a way that I didn't see it happening in, or how well communication can/will be, etc. I mean, I guess you can always look at someone's profile and check out the professionalism of their past works, but there's just a feeling of apprehension in putting so much effort into something when you feel like you don't have complete control over it, ya know?

Maybe that's just me; I dunno. I'm weird like that.

I think Newgrounds overall has a few tweaks that I think could be useful.

=======

((The Art Portal / Personal Art Pages could be more flexible.))

%u2022 The ability to make sub-folders in their Art Portal so they can categorize their art in a variety of ways.

%u2022 I also think that one should have the ability to enable "ZIP Downloads" so that people who make comics can organize page after page of viewing and downloading.

%u2022 Obviously the "Reviews" page is still under development for the Art Pages. I would love to know when I get responses to the art that I review and that I may view them as well.

%u2022 Viewing my favorite art or other people's art collection would be so much easier if it had a slideshow option.

((Picture Posting on Personal Blogs))

%u2022 This has been a bit of an offensive issue with me when people post PORN on their personal home page blogs. Sure you don't have to visit these blogs, but people who post images on their blogs means anyone could see it - and sometimes the images are so harmful it gives NG a bad rep. Is there a way for Newgrounds to rate when people are going to post an image they know is NSFW? Like it'll be encouraged when you do want to post something adult rated that by marking them will earn you "Protect the Youth" points? Or something less gay sounding than that.

%u2022 Why hasn't Newgrounds enabled multiple picture posting? You can enable almost as many videos as you want. Why can't you post more than one picture? And in any order between texts? So that way people make a "how to do" list with written procedures and stuff without making a low rez video.

((Personal Radio to play all favorites whenever you want))

%u2022 I think it may be allot of work, but imagine if everyone's home page played a link that uploaded the NG Radio Flash and automatically played that person's favorite music list instantly? It could simply be a "play-button" right next to the "Favorite Audio" bar.

((Play Random))

%u2022 I sometimes can't decided which Flash from my favorites I want to play. In the bar, you could have a link that randomly chooses a flash from your favorites list to play or watch. "Play Random."

((Please Update your iTunes account))

%u2022 Almost half of your flashes on iTunes are gone. And more should be uploaded. I would love to bring my favorite flashes on the go.

======

These are just some ideas off the top of my head. I know programing is allot of work. But if you consider that Newgrounds is constantly evolving and adapting, these ideas might be worth investing into to make Newgrounds just a notch cooler than other sites. But forgive me if these ideas sound too mum-dame or if there is already a solution to my observations that I am not aware of.

Have a great 2011'

I'm hoping that the site's focus turns more toward the writing over the next 12 months - I'm primed to release a new contest tomorrow morning and we will be focusing on producing scripts to music from the Audio Portal, which, if all goes to plan, some budding authors can turn into flash projects of their own!

I'm hoping to see more people step out of their comfort zone with new, untested ideas and platforms. We should all take a step back from what we've been doing and be ready to learn and try new things to advance ourselves and the whole creatively. I've made my last Audio submission of the year and hope to be taking some of the contest entries and some of my own works out there with narrations being my theme for 2011 on the front, while also putting to be the procrastination of the past 12 months, with other fronts leaping forward as well. Who knows, this could be my greatest year on Newgrounds to date!

A very happy new year to you all! Chin chin!

Apparently I forgot to mention a few more things...

When you copy and paste links, they still have spaces for some reason.

And the blogs is limited in characters.

I can't to a "Alt + 8" to create a "dot"

More game jams. I think you learn alot, and are forced to work with new people. Even if you are unsuccessful (*whistles*), you can still pull alot of valuable lessons from it. From streamlining your workflow, to dealing with different timezones, keeping ideas manageable (probably the most important one I learned this past jam). I think having a jam tied to already existing events would be cool... like a pico day game jam / robot day game jam / halloween game jam etc. I think with a project management system in place, those things will really begin to get momentum and start / reestablish programmer/artist/music bromances.

Good year, im happy to have met new people and touched base with old acquaintances in the events ive attended.

Although I was gone most of the year from the site, I couldn't help but notice the gradual change from Newgrounds being a community to it becoming a watered down YouTube. Popular Newgrounds artist making the transition into other forms of media helped (Super Meat Boy helped maintain our monopoly on XBLA) but I couldn't help like feeling that Newgrounds has become too crowded. A lot of good submissions, and even users, seem to be getting lost in the shuffle.

Everything died down in the movies department after the "Explosm Explosion." The number of over-the-top 15mb+ submissions were spread apart by months instead of a week or two, which I think was a real disappointment. Then Zeurel came in and submitted three movies each getting all three awards, which I thought was fitting since he's easily the second best animator on the site, next to Adam Phillips. Idk, everyone else just either started getting commissions or working in another program.

The games department was a blast though, I can honestly say there were very few weeks that went by without an amazing game to play through. Nothing much to say because it was just a blast to be a gamer on newgrounds this year.

But yeah, this was the year of the flash game, not the flash movie, unlike 2009 when we had like two and a half epic movies and games a week.

I miss rtil too. He's pretty fucking amazing when he doesn't troll.

rtil's site

Watch the lighthouse girl, he just won an award for it and it'll be showing at a bunch of film festivals. I really wish we could hold on to guys like him.

It would be neat to have another kind of "power of three" thing again. It produced some interesting results, and made people work together who otherwise probably would not have.
