3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsEver since 3D games started coming out (which was almost a decade ago), no one would buy 2D games except the die hard gamers, and we all know there aren't that many of that. So, I'm here asking, who still plays 2D games?
Well let's see here, just in my Steam Game's list I have a few 2D games... World of Goo, Worms Reloaded, Super Meat Boy, Gish, Beat Hazard, and Osmos.
It's mostly those smaller indie games of course, which are usually good. Not really about whether it's 2D or 3D, it's about if it's fun.
A lot of people still do, if the sales figures of New Super Mario Brothers and Donkey Kong Country returns are right. Also, there are lots of 2d games being sold on Xbox Live and PSN.
Not to mention all the flash games here on Newgrounds.

I still play my old Snes every now and then if that counts.
It really just depends. I can't think of any modern 2D games that I play, but it's quite common for me to play my older consoles if I have some free time and I'm bored. I still enjoy Rayman, although it has been a while since I last played.

Braid is the only decent 2D game I've ever played.

You've obviously never owned a SNES.

Well every other 2D game I've played either involves jumping on some things head, holding the Spray and pray button in some form of direction while spamming the jump button, or being a dolphin on a magical quest to save his dolphin friends.
I still stand by my opinion.

Wrong, it's more like 15 years and closer to 20 if you count games like Wolvenstein 3D and Doom.
no one would buy 2D games except the die hard gamers
Wrong, there are a fuckton of 2D games on platforms like the DS and iPhone and I wouldn't call everybody who bought New Super Mario Brothers or Angry Birds a die hard gamer.
Of course people still play 2D games, there are absolutely loads of developers making 2D games for current gen platforms and they sell in huge numbers, including a couple of the best XBLA games this year, Limbo and Super Meat Boy. And let's not forget Nintendo who are still making 2D versions of some of their classic games and selling millions of copies of them.
OP you really should have put more thought into this before posting.
Playin' Super Meat Boy as we speak!
After a 2D game comes out, a day after I have it on my comp.
I'm cool.
I do :P... Mainly the ones downloaded from Xbox Live. 'Braid' is a great one.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is what I call as masterpiece.

So you've only played Echo the Dolphin, Super Mario Bros and Contra? Not really much to go by.
Personally I play 2D games quite often. Oddworld, Mega Man, Super Meat Boy, Braid, Monkey Island and a fuck ton of SNES games (I have super metroid in my SNES right now).
Of course. What matters is how fun the game is, and 2d games are still fun. Many people still buy 2d games because of that.
Just spent an hour and a half playing Super Meat Boy, brilliant, recommend to anyone who loves a challenge.

Of course people still play 2D games many of them are still good in gaming graphics are not everything they are merely a plus. Titles such as quake and duke nukem still reign supreme in some gamers worlds.
Yes, a large majority of the games on NG are 2D. They're the only place I play 2D game anymore though, I have no interest in 2D console games anymore.
Yea, I farm Anal Penguins. Do something about it.
I play plenty of 2D freeware games like IWBTG and Cave Story, not to mention various Xbox Live and Wii Shopping Network titles. 2D is an irresistible format, what can I say?
There is no Mercy, only DoDonPachi
im busy playing Castlevania symphony of the night.
People stopped playing Metal Slug Advanced?
2D games will obviously always be around, as they offer a different kind of gameplay experience than 3D games.
Some 2D games also will always work better in 2D. See Castlevania.
Do you just mean 2D platformers or 2D in general? I play Patapon and the sequel all the time, but Sonic is at the top as well.
Damn it, (name) I'm not anything my username says I am. GET OVER IT!
Indie gaming fans, most handheld gaming fans, and retro gaming fans still often play 2D games. Count in games with 2D gameplay but polygonal graphics such as the New Super Mario Bros. games and Sonic 4, and you have even more players, though at least some of them are retro fans as well.
.
Lately I've really started getting into 2D fighting games like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue (Marvel VS Capcom and the like). I'll tolerate and in some cases enjoy 2D puzzle platformers, but games that are just 2D platformers, don't quite cut it for me anymore.
