So,i would like to consult modern players(thats you) and ask them if they are experiencing this too.
Offer examples too please.

Agreed,in 95% of the cases its NOT the console.
I think that the makers are just running out of ideas.

If you want story, you play Deadly Premonition.
Yaaaaaay.
You are missing DA point.
Its not about which games have a story,or about which games are popular.
Its about the way games get more dence through time.
Get back on the REAL topic please.

You're seriously saying older games had more of a story?
There's PLOTS in games now?
jk
Gaming rarely focused on story as their main shining point. It's always been like that. Some genres like adventure and RPG have decent to great stories (seriously, play Monkey Island and you'll know). Every other genre... meh. I mean, it's just until the late 90s to early 2000s to which FPS games had a plot that didn't involve mindless violence and became more Hollywood-styled with it. Developers focus more time on the actual gameplay than the story.
No,at the time of the oldest games storys didnt exist.
Then the less old games had brilliant storys.
Then the storys became masterpieces.
AND THEN they started decaying and STILL ARE.
Sure the actual games today rock, but the storys arent as original and magnificent as before.
AGAIN,get back on the topic, this isnt about me,its about what i noticed.

Go watch the TF2 Meet the Team videos and think about what you've done.
Sorry for double posting, but a reply came WHILE i was posting earlier.
Anyway,this goes for all games.
Some genres(always;shooters for example) have less of a story, but even that tiny little story is rarely EVER original today.
Am i right or am i not left.

Im cursed with people replying AT THE SAME TIME THAT I DO.
Yes,there are examples of great games today, but they are REALLY RARE.
Its nice to see that you found some original-story games, but most of them arent.
And the fact is that most people (like me) are too lazy to hunt for those rare, original games.

I have one title for you:
BIOSHOCK.
Off the top of my head;
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Assassin's Creed
Red Dead Redemption
and, I'll have to come back for more.
Plenty games have lackluster plots, but there are still plenty more gems with excellent storytelling.

So true, but NOT the recent ones

Ok, guess what, you're correct.
OP hasn't been playing the right games at all if he thinks they're Devolving. Because in reality it's the opposite and has been for a long time... Actually, since games have come out they have been doing nothing but getting better.
i blame all the stupid shit about "whats hot" these days, people make games for online now mostly, story is a thing of the past to some developers, keyword SOME.
All the mainstream overhyped games are FPS games however but if you notice (or if your even bothering paying attention in the store) you will still find the games i like, unheard of, underground indie games.
The ones with unusual titles and characters on the box like "a boy and his blob" and "ivy the wiki?" and "Patapon," it seems creativity wise Japan is ahead of us, then again they're always 3 steps ahead of us.
And lets not forget recettear, a story about an item shop and a fairy that screws it over.
Threads like this, it's like this whole board it's fucking thirteenth years old.
alarmist derps, nothing has changed.
This is why im glad I dont give a fuck
Death cures a fool
I think its multiplayer...
regardless of a story or not, most games used to have a great single player experience that would get you to immerse yourself in the game.
now most games focus on multiplayer, I like multiplayer but I hate how so many games are focusing on multiplayer so much to the point where the single player experience isn't as great as it should be
thanks for the sig Phobotech
Dont you guys get it? Its a middle ground in my opinion.
Halo: good story, still overfocused on multi.
Patapon: THATS origional, and the first one had no multi!
So, yeah, the stories are devolving, but not to that extent.
Damn it, (name) I'm not anything my username says I am. GET OVER IT!
Yeah, but some of the new games like that are pretty good.
The above post is useless.

We were talking about the story, not about how awesome gameplay is.
Anyone ever heard of Shantae?

You must ride the short bus, yes? He just pointed out a series of RECENT games that have excellent storylines.

Those ARE the recent ones. RDR came out this year.
We're in for another revolution, Super Mario Bros. did the first one, because nearly every game in about 10 years after that was a platformer.
Halo probably did the second one (not sure, though) because now every game is a shooter.
I'm sick and tired of shooters these days and I love the more creative stuff. Then again, I still enjoy UT99...
I wonder what the next will be, because people will get tired of shooters some day...
Damn it, (name) I'm not anything my username says I am. GET OVER IT!
I can be a real douchebag and quote somebody much smarter and opinionated on this subject than I am, but he really did have a point. It is financially difficult for developers to make new and original ideas for games, and it's not the consoles, nor the PC's fault. It's the fault of greedy VG companies (not the developers though) and the consumers (us).
I usually frequent the VG and collaboration Forums. If you find me anywhere else, I'm lost and can't find my way back.
At 12/22/10 03:46 PM, Gustavos wrote: the consumers (us).
Oh, Gustavos. You bring up the Overthinker, and play the perfect move for me to continue your combo. It's all our fault, as gamers. Stagnation, casuals, we're to blame for all of it. Our insecurities. Our demands. Games are brown and gray and macho because we demanded brown and gray and macho. Everything else in games is built around our demands for particularly masculine characters in a world of brown and gray, and the plot is no different. It is treated as an afterthought by an unfortunate number of developers: behind brown and gray and extreme masculinity, and behind online multiplayer, you might find some idea of a story, but just enough of one to justify a macho protagonist shooting random enemies in a world of gray and brown. This is because far too many gamers demand brown and gray and extreme masculinity, because it's easier to create longevity with online multiplayer in many genres than to make an engaging plot.
But this isn't universally true. Assassin's Creed has a damn good plot, and while the ancestor-heroes are definitely badass, that isn't bad at all, especially when Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood don't play into the "brown and gray" aesthetic. I'm pretty sure there's other games out there that have some plot to them too, though my experiences with modern console gaming are limited by my dislike for the dominant design aesthetic.
