Does anybody believe there should be ads in flash games?

I'm really getting tired of having to go through a 30 second advertisement everytime I play a flash game. Plus the artist doesn't even get that much money anyway (considering the sponsor gets most of the money.) The attitude is "How can it hurt? Pocket change is pocket change." The thing is maybe newgrounds should incorporate a donation system where we can donate to artists for their flash submissions or something, or at least a system where we can consolidate sponsorships so we don't have to focus on individual flash submissions.

I understand that artists want to make money for their hard work, but to be honest it's more of a trend than anything and it's clear that they're getting kind of greedy (just look at games with 'premium content'.)

Perhaps if artists had more integrity with the amount of money they made to their flash games instead of trying to shove it down our throats, I'd be a little bit more accepting. But really I'm afraid of when we start having to watch 2 minute ads just to read a website.

Like I said..pocket change. It's not like this is their job. Newgrounds is mostly an amatuer flash portal, and I believe it's supposed to be one. Besides, even if they did live on it, I'm sure they'd have a much more dedicated approach than inserting commercial ads in their games.

The problem is that most internet content is not self-supporting. When google acquired youtube, it took them a couple of years to get it to start generating a profit.

NG has kept going on ads, deals, etc. Funds have to come from somewhere...imho watching a thirty second ad once in a while is not much to ask for a ton of free awesome content.

Before they load, right click really fast and hit play. Skips right through them.

I always vote 0 on a game that has one. Maybe if we all do that it'll teach them a lesson.

Yes. Those ads give flash artists an added incentive to keep submitting great stuff, as it brings in revenue.

I'm really getting tired of having to go through a 30 second advertisement everytime I play a flash game. The thing is maybe newgrounds should incorporate a donation system where we can donate to artists for their flash submissions or something, or at least a system where we can consolidate sponsorships so we don't have to focus on individual flash submissions.

Deal with it. The artist can make a good amount of money if his flash gets enough views; a donation system would fail miserably in my opinion, as ads are more effective in bringing revenue than donations ever could be.

I understand that artists want to make money for their hard work, but to be honest it's more of a trend than anything and it's clear that they're getting kind of greedy (just look at games with 'premium content'.)

What the hell are you talking about?

You're making artists out to be greedy little assholes, when they're not. You don't seem to understand that the ad revenue system is there to reward those flash artists who put in enough effort to make a high quality flash submission. Gain some understanding about how things work at Newgrounds before you start bitching about watching FREE flash videos and playing FREE flash games.

It's not like they owe you something. The flash is free. If you don't like the ads, get Ad Blocker Plus or go to a different page. It's that simple.

And while we're at it, NO COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!!
Seriously dude? It's not nearly that big of a deal. 30 fucking seconds of your life. If it's wasting your time then go outside and don't even play flash games.
Also, no one would donate. Honestly, I wouldn't, and I bet most people wouldn't, even if they say they would.

The only ads I see in newgrounds are the api ads, which don't interfere with anything, and sometimes short introductions from their sponsor. Addicting games has those 30 second commercials, but it's not much to ask for playing free games.

If it's a in a preloader, that's fine. But if they insert it in the actual flash, then it gets annoying.

The Newgrounds ones don't bother me nearly as much because (usually) they don't replay the ads after the first time. There are a ton of facebook games where you'll die or lose in a few seconds and have to watch a 15 second ad each and every time you play again. It's stressful.

Like I said..pocket change.

Clearly you know not what you talk about.

The NG Powered ads, the third party ad company gets 25% of the revenue, NG gets 25% of the revenue (required to keep the servers up and running) and the artist gets the lion's share, 50%.

It is also not pocket change for popular artists, many of whom earn MORE than a comfortable living from ad revenue.

I find it funny that you're complaining about sitting through a 30 second ad before being entertained for free, when these artists give up weeks and months of their time to develop their animations and games.

You've heard incorrectly. My last game has earned me about 4,000$ from the sponsor, and over 700$ in advertisements. And it isn't even really that popular.

Advertisements are very important for the flash developers that are doing it for a full time job. They need to earn money! So you guys should stop complaining about the ads.

Besides, CPMstar ads don't make you sit through 30 second video ads anyways. Only when the game is loading.*
Mochiads does though... but that's a different story.

I just watch the ad and play the game after the ad is over. They are normally just short little clips anyways. Though, I have noticed that more games than usual have ads now. Christmas funds?

Nobody would use the donation system.
Think of it this way, instead of that donation system they have this, and if you're too god damn patient to wait 30 seconds after it loads because of an Ad, go play some shit on Miniclip or something.
Consider how much time the authors put in to their work, only to have people like you bitch about an extra .10 cents a click because any penny towards their efforts helps, but you're too stupid to realize it or just too stupid to care.

Yeah, whatever.

Yes, it may be pocket change to some. I probably make 40 to 50 dollars a month from ad revenue and it's really no big deal, but to some they make much more. Some people make thousands a month from their ad revenue.

They don't just submit to newgrounds. I have flashes on hundreds and hundreds of sites pulling in money. My shitty mediocre work brings me that much, but I've heard of people making more a year than people with a college degree make.

They're only about 20 seconds long. I'm sure you could masturbate or make a post while it's loading and then come back later. (Maybe even blink, it should be over after that) I actually click every ad while the games are loading because I know how every little bit of ad revenue can help.

My last 100 dollar check gave me a nice amount of for Christmas gifts, things that I wouldn't have had money for before. I suggest keeping your mouth shut if you're going to have it located in your ass.

The NG Flash Ad system never had these types of ads before, they've only just started to starting loading on flash games/movies which are big enough to display the ad. Also the sponsor gets none of the money from these ads, they're paying for them goddamnit! I agree with you 0% if you ask me. Sure it's only a bit, but what do you lose? "Oh, I had to wait 20 seconds for an advertisement I'm going to commit suicide now"
