My first 3D rapid prototype 2010-12-20 00:57:13 Reply

I don't often talk about the artsy side of my work. I'm much more involved in the technical side of artistic creation (Programming, rigging, dynamics, etc). However, I thought that this was cool enough to warrant sharing with people.

I enjoy doing a little bit of 3D modeling in my downtime. Problem is I don't ever have enough time to become as good at it as I'd like. To give myself a little bit of motivation, I figured I'd do a quick 3D sculpt and make a 3D print out of it.

So long story short, here's a 3D model that I created using MudBox and ZBrush. Yes it's a dragon bust, nothing too fancy.

And ...

... here is the sculpt I got, printed by Moddler. A few hundred bucks got me a model 4" high (Seems pricey for that height, but my model does use up quite a lot of material for that size). Unfortunately, there is no way that a photograph can convey how awesome the print actually turned out. You just have to be there to hold it in your hands. It's made of a resin material and it catches light in a really awesome way. You can also feel the detail that was put in to the skin (Feels pretty rough) but unfortunately you're not able to see it like I was hoping you would.

All in all, it's an expensive practice, but totally worth doing at least once for those who are in to 3D modeling...

Damn, I checked the prices at that site, and I will say that ain't no chump change, but damn it looks like it was so worth it. I really like that dragon head. It is kind of simplified, like a logo. Very nice.
I need to get 3dsmax installed again and get back to work on some of my "forgotten" Models...

If you were gonna get a sculpt, you should've made it more detailed.

He probably doesn't have the time or skill to make something detailed and look good, As for what it is and what it seems to be his level of artsyness I'd say he actually hit a very good point inbetween simple and good.
