"Nice track overall. It took a bit long to really kick in, and it really was rather repetitive. I didn't mind it much since it sounded great, especially 3:45 on. The synth you introduced then made this song for me. Other than the repetitiveness and the drawn out buildup, I've got no complaints for you. Everything meshed together nicely, transitions were smooth, and it all just sounded nice together."
DJInTheDark - SCORE - 78
"The opening was a little slow, but it didn't bother me to much. Though the whole thing was pretty solid, but ever so slightly minimal. The mixing is also strange. The main lead in the song that starts about half way through is way louder than it needs to be in comparison to the rest of the song. It's already much more unique compared to the other instruments, so even it if was a lot quieter, the listener would be able to pick it out as the driving force in the piece. There's two much reverb on each individual instrument that has reverb. If you distributed the reverb between the instruments that really need it in order to create the proper atmosphere your trying to create, and the instruments that are the focal points of the song, I think it will overall make the whole structure of the song much cleaner and clearer. I like the melody, but I definitely think you could spice it up a little while maybe some chord progression diversions, or even maybe a key change in there towards the climactic half of the ending."

"You're consistently one of the best artists in each round, Solus. This round is no exception. This is fantastic. You were able to take the energy of a DnB track, and inject it into a chill trance piece. Although it's not as good to me as your other entries, it's still top notch material here. The only flaw I can find is it's a bit repetitive. Not that it's a particularly bad thing, this sounds great, but there's not a whole lot of growth or change."
DJInTheDark - SCORE - 81
"The opening was very interesting. I was very happy with the direction you took it in, it was very surprising and fluid. Speaking of fluid, I would say that's what this song might have been missing a little bit. When I say fluid, I'm not referring to the structure of the song, which is by the way very very nice. I'm talking more about the melodic elements of the background. I think they could have used a little or of a "liquid DnB" approach. Maybe make a few things a little wetter and less present to give those particular parts a little more of a background feel to begin with. Overall, like the mixed emotion of the song, thought it was a little repetitive in the harmonious aspect of the song, but overall, very enjoyable to listen to."

"Every. Single. Round. There's someone who submits a song I just don't know what to say. I have NOTHING to say about this. It's really good, but I have NO idea why. Can't say what's wrong with it, can't say quite what I like. I'm sowwie >.>"
DJInTheDark - SCORE - 86
"This song literally made me go "Hmmm." The instruments weren't too heavy but were apparent and present. The melodic parts were all very well constructed, but it seemed to me that they didn't like to work very well with each. The production and design quality of this piece is probably my favorite aspect of it. It makes the whole thing sound familiar even though I've never heard it before, if you know what I'm saying. The biggest problem I would say that I didn't have enough time to enjoy the high points of the song. It got to the climax, and then before I even had time to realize I was in the climax, it was gone. I did however like the ending very much, it gave me the type of emotion that I though I would get out of this song so kudos for that. The problem with the ending though (even though technically there's nothing wrong with it itself) is that it made the rest of the song seem of less quality. The ending was short, sweet and to the point in a manner that got the feeling across perfectly, but the rest of the song before that didn't display that same accuracy. Length has never been an issue for me in any song that I have ever listened to. I'm not going to automatically say a song is bad based on its run time. For me it's a matter of, did you use the time to the best of your ability. My rule is take as much time as you need to get your point across, if you go over or under that, that's when the problems start. For this song however, it was only a slight problem. It wasn't repetitive, nor was it out stretched, all you did was use just a small bit of extra time that you didn't need in order to truly express yourself through it. I know I talked a little too much about "me" in there but I hope what I said made sense in regards to you rather than me."

"You sir, are a breakcore God. You can never go wrong with pianos in breakcore. Ever. You did a damn good job with this one. The piano was perfect here. The transition from the introduction to the main song, made me jizz. The sudden burst of only bass, with the interruption of the drums building up sent shivers down my spine. Everything from then on was fantastic. Utterly fantastic. The glitching was flawless. The patterns in the drums never really got old. I was grasped the entire time. The ambient instruments in the background kept all the chaos under control, and it just complimented the drums. I loved every second of it."
DJInTheDark - SCORE - 84
"Some of your reviews said it was a little quite, but I thought it was right where it needed to be, un-over-compressed like more drum and bass songs, and with plenty of contrast between sections. And then of course backing it up with the combination of being able to take those two contrasting emotion and fuse them together to make something completely new. Drum work is nice as always. Although, there is one thing that I wish I had seen for this song. It's something that I don't see very often, but when I do I appreciate every minute of it. I'll try to explain it as best I can. It when in a drum and bass song, you're going along. You have the drums going like you do in this song, which is absolutely fine, but then all of a sudden, rather then a change in melody, or a change in emotion or something along those lines, they change the drum system. Sometimes it's a new beat structure, sometimes it's an overall drum effect activation, or sometimes they change the whole drum set altogether. So how that pertains to this song is that, while the drums in your song are constantly changing as they should in order to keep it interesting, they're the same type of drums if you know what I'm getting at. I hope I explained it right."

Hate to sound antagonistic, but you dont just blurt out whatever comes to mind when reviewing. Theres plenty of bassline factors that go into a song(no pun intended :D). Percussion, how good the mix is, overall writing, innovation/creativity, just look at a NAGDM review. But saying: "eh i felt like it deserved an 86, not really sure why." isnt a review. The score is even very reasonable, but keep a method behind madness please.
Thanks for hosting the competition in the very first place though.

I'm sorry, Now I feel like a total douche.
I'm not perfect. I never claimed to be. I thought I made it clear I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to music and how sound is structured, but I at least would try despite not being up to par. I tried. I really did. I know my review for you was fucking terrible. I'm not retarded. My review for EVERYone this round was fucking terrible. On top of that, the majority of my reviews PERIOD were terrible. I realized that from the first review by DJITD that I read back in the first round. I didn't want to be a judge in the first place - I originally hoped more than just DJITD would be able to actually judge, so I could compete as well. I've never been good with critiquing. Ever. I only made this so those who didn't have a chance to compete against each other would be given that chance. I don't/didn't mind being a judge, I figured it couldn't be too hard, but I realized I couldn't just take it lightheartedly, it was a serious thing. I'd have to really try since it would require me to do things not normally in my set of strong points. I spent several hours doing reviews Round 1. I spend about an hour and a half doing round 2. I spend just shy of an hour on reviews this round. Yes. Possibly the four weakest reviews in this competition took an entire hour. Ever have a panic attack? Ever get so scared your body releases adrenaline, but there's nothing you can do to burn it off? Ever have to try not to tear yourself up? Ever try writing accurate, complete, and thoughtful reviews while that's happening? It's not easy, to say the least.
God dammit.
I know you just happened to get the worst review I've ever had to write. I'm sorry, it's nothing against you. It really wasn't. You've gotta give me credit for some of my other reviews other rounds for at least trying, it wasn't up to par, I know, but my knowledge about audio structure isn't in-depth. Not at all. I have no education in the matter, and I have merely "does it sound good" to rely on.

Dont get on yourself so hard dude, its just the internet in the end ;). This compettition was FOR fun and it was fun! I dont think i woulda had the push to churn out the songs ive made in the past couple weeks if it wasnt for this competition. I hate to hear you suffer from anxiety disorders, but do you really have panic attacks 24/7? This isnt the top competition of the year, its the "not-good'enough" artists of the portal. Or maybe not-good-enough yet artists :P.
And as an amateur producer yourself you should know what goes into a making a song(its ALOT of work!). So when analyzing it, just imagine every little automation that person did, every tiny eq boost, and how it was a technical, emotional, and musical journey. Even though you may not have the master ears of some of the people on this very site, try to use their skills in reviewing as well as music producing as an example. Best of wishes for the next round for both contestants and judges.

Oh sure, blame it on me! IT"S ALWAYS MY FAULT.
note - *sarcasm*
Also, I wanted to say something before but I accidentally closed the window I was typing in and then forgot about it. Anyway, what I wanted to say was, I also feel a little bad as well. I know that everybody already knows that nobody was implying any truly malicious statements to each other, and that the problem is already sorted out anyway and this post I am vainly writing is, well, in vain. I know it seems like I put a bit of effort into my reviews (or maybe it doesn't seem that way, who knows) but my point is that I know what Numi is talking about when he says he couldn't think of anything to write. And sometimes that's a good thing. What I think it means is that the art (in this case, your song) had such a unique feel to it that the English language couldn't come close to defining what it is and what it could be. I know that's a little far fetched but hey, we can dream can't we?
So let's all just take this as a benign lesson to us all that no matter how we approach our opinions, no of use can truly understand another's.
Wow, I just reread that over and it made no sense whatsoever! WOO
Pointless post is pointless.

Didn't mean to come off like a twat. Sorry, man. I really didn't. had a bad day, on the edge of some problems, and then this was just enough to set me over the edge... >.>
And no, anxiety issues aren't 24/7, but as of the last week or so, I've been worse and worse, and it's been almost all day, every day that I've got some degree of nervousness, shakiness, etc.
And as for being a musician myself, one of the biggest problems with my songs, what I think may be the reason they tend not to be so great, is I don't even know what EQ'ing is. I just kinda throw some patterns together, twiddle a few knobs here and there until it sounds bearable, throw on a few automation clips, and pray to god it sounds okay. The only mastering (I don't even know if that's the right word) I do is twiddling with volumes and panning once I get the sound I'm looking for out of my synths (and all I do there is play with attack, gain, treble, bass, middle, and filter). I don't know what "the mix" is. I don't understand any of it, I was never taught. This is largely what I was talking about when it comes to being uneducated in audio structure.
And to top that all off, I don't even understand the genre you produce. I like it, everything I've heard in Progressive House so far is pretty great, but I've only heard a handful of tracks. I don't know how the genre works. Imagine hearing a single DnB track. You have no other references for DnB in your head. It'd be a tad hard to accurately criticize the track, especially since you can't even really think about how the song was made, or what it was even intended to be.
I'm glad you enjoyed being in the competition, I tried to make sure it was fun, when I read your response I took it sarcastically when you said it was fun.
tl;dr summary
Sorry I was a twat. I didn't mean to take out my problems on you. I just got pushed over the edge, and was starting to break down at the time of reading your response. I didn't take it well.

And to numi, you should definetly catch up on your progressive house/trance! Its the biggest electronic genre!(even though shitstep is catchin up effin fast).

Ive been following this contest from the very beginning, and I must point out, I knew Retro would make it to the final round, I was there when he made his first song, and from that point on I knew he had some great talent. So to wrap this up, RETROMANOMG FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW, the image provided is for Retro, only he will get it.

...I hate that image, and the image it puts in my head...
I guess thank you for the support, and...I'm sorry, this is really awkward having people who like my music coming into this thread like that. Sorry, Numi.

Oh well.
Man are you just trying to do what I did and make it so fucking long that you win by default?
Because it's a good strategy. :D

No, not at all! I started on it as soon as I found out I made the finals, but kept thinking of ideas for it as I went along.
It was originally going to be just 4 minutes long, but I guess I got carried away.
