Drawing Backgrounds

I'm trying to make a short, I need two backgrounds, one of a door step being looked out/down upon "as if something was on it" and then one another of the from of the house the doorstep belongs to. I'm having trouble getting this to look the way I Want, any advice ? tips, hints? cheat codes?

From what I can gather, you'd need to know some perspective to get a proper scene done (A nice tutorial here). Aside from that, there's really no cheats.
Remember - when stuck, you can always take a photo of what you want to draw or something similar to itand study it.
