Need musicians for a gift album 2010-12-04 18:43:35 Reply

Reposting this from failed thread in collabs because I'm a fucking idiot:

So uh, hi guys. Whassup?

Okay, getting to the nitty gritty. Long story short, I got this game concept project I've been working on (no, it's just a concept doc, no plans for development yet) that incorporates the characters of a few buddies on forums I go to. Because these people are awesome for letting me use their characters and just supporting the concept in general, I've decided to give them a treat and commission a theme song for every single one of them out of my own pocket - considering there's about 14 in all at this point, I figured I might as well make it an album while I'm at it. I've already asked Tweaker of Sonic fandom fame for a comission or several, but because I like you guys I figured this community could fill the gaps. If you wanna work for free, hey, that's awesome, but I'm willing to pay about 20 bucks per song via Paypal if it gives people incentive to sign up. Finally, I'll be checking the previous work of anyone who signs up - I'm expecting good quality songs out of this, and I'll refuse signups if I feel their work is not up to par - sorry folks, but frankly I'm not going to pay money if the music ain't worth it.

So anyway here's what I'm looking for. Just pick one from the list, then we can start talking numbers.

Psi/BL
(ohshit guys did I mention the concept is full of furries? lolol)

This guy's the main character. He goes through a bout of amnesia at the start and has to figure out what the hell happened. Generic yes, I know. His gimmick is basically having dual personas that share the same body, as well as being both telekinetic and a mind controller (albiet he can only really make people hallucinate at his level). For his theme I'm looking for a relatively tame Trance mix with a melodic backing consisting of small bells. T-Free's Electric Tears almost hits the mark perfectly, especially with the synth that kicks in at 0:24 (definently need something like that), just could use some stronger bell samples for the theme.

Akumaryu Kadokawa

Supporting lead. He's sent by a prophet to watch over Psi after fortelling the destruction he'll eventually cause, but quickly becomes close friends. He can sense the emotions of others so strongly that he sometimes feels them as his own, but he's also an experienced mage, possesses lightning powers and can run obscenely fast compared to anyone else. His request was a speedy rock theme with a breakbeat backing to influence the tempo (something with this kind of pacing). If you can include subtle influences from typical saturday morning animes, even better - he's a bit of a weeaboo IRL, see, and it'd be awesome to see that referenced.

Artemis

Antagonist. Almost always covered in black robes, and initially runs a bounty organisation as Psi's boss, though it's later revealed he has a secret agenda. Deceptive and cunning, he's a skilled Gun Fu practitioner, and he's so amazingly acrobatic about you'd think he came straight out of The Matrix. For him I had something dark and gritty in mind, but down-tempo a bit. Some kind of bassy, slow-paced Industrial track would be perfect. If you need influences, a mixture between Celldweller and this Helix6 track would be a match made in heaven.

Sooku

He's a good guy. Upbeat, laidback, even happy-go-lucky to an extent, he's a hedgehog who's generally a nice guy to have around and doesn't lose his cool much. Oh, and he has an energy buster gun for an arm, with recoil so ridiculous that he uses it to catapult himself around. His request was pretty lax, and his only real condition was that it had to be an upbeat theme. Besides that, I'm looking for something of a rock tune with synth leads, kinda like SA2's Eternal Engine, then mix some subtle Touhou references in for good measure because he's such a huge fan of them.

Suzaku

Recurring villain. Probably the most human-looking person in the cast, save for the fact he has demon wings and horns. He's part of an immortal race known as demonic angels (yes, we're well aware of the oxymoron), and acts mostly to steal the powers of others to make himself stronger. We had an orchestrated theme in mind for him - very heavily string based, and played in slow, depressing, intimidating chords with low pitch strings. Pretty much like this. If you feel the need to build to a climax, I'd suggest using a brass chorus in place of the main melody for it. The basic idea is that the mere presence of the character is supposed to inspire dread, and so too should his theme.

Lynness

Little demonic angel girl summoned by Suzaku. She doesn't have the ability to steal powers, but she can teleport and control the essense of darkness instead. Initially she was Suzaku's servant, but she turns on him after making friends with Sooku, becoming a protagonist instead. For her theme we had some symphonic metal in mind, preferably something likened to Kamelot's Ghost Opera. I mean crap, Ghost Opera couldn't be more perfect for the theme, so just basically follow that song's structure with different melodies and you have a winner.

Techron

Oh lordy, where do I start? Well, I can say that she's a good guy, but she's absolutely goddamned bonkers due to a malfunction she suffers early into her role. She's about as heavily armed as E-123 Omega, but she constantly spounts irrelevant dialogue and gets on people's nerves in much the same way Invader Zim's Gir does. As far as theme goes, I just thought "F__k it, just make her dance to Carameldansen, what could go wrong?", so yeah, something similarly Pop and upbeat like that. I knowthere's no shortage of musicians specializing in this sort of thing here. Beyond that, I guess you can basically go nuts as long as it fits the nutty theme.

Kit

Token military man, though lacking in discipline and occasionally even outright cowardly. He's tasked with looking after Techron until she gets fixed, and to say it's a love-hate relationship is a massive overstatement. He dual-wields a sword/knife combo at close range, but generally prefers to engage from as far away as possible - if not with his trusty AR, preferably with his sniper railgun and OMG (Orbital Magnitude Gun) target designator. Deciding his theme was pretty difficult, but we decided on some kind of gritty rock like this, then mixing in a military drum rhythm to tie in with his army links.

Mimic

Personality-wise, he's kind of a mix between Sooku and Techron - he's bloody crazy to the extent of punching people with active hand grenades, but he's practically serene about it and drops the kind of one-lines that would make both James Bond and Duke Nukem blush with jealousy. As you might've guessed, he's an explosives fanatic, but he can also shape-shift into various useful and disturbing forms like turning his limbs into sharp objects. We had a fast-paced Jazzy theme in mind for him, with special emphasis on very rapidfire saxaphone notes as the lead melody. Beyond that, you're free to use whatever Jazz themes you can think of to fit the character described.

Post size limitations starting to come close, will continue this list in the next post.

Dread

Essentially a living bioweapon. He's usually covered in a black, sentient liquid that inspires miraculous regeneration and healing in whatever it touches, but also controls whatever it touches, like some kind of reverse-parasite. Long story short, he spreads this stuff to other people and before long he has a zombie-like army at his disposal. Suffice to say, I'm looking for an ambient horror theme for this guy, consisting mostly of a very basic and short melody or sound that's almost universally present whenever he's around (kind of like the beginning to this song). In addition, I want absolutely no percussion at all if possible, lots of subsonic sounds to add eerie background, and if necessary, a few sudden volume spikes for fright effect (like Dead Space, lol).

Nightmare

Kind of like a ghost of sorts, his character is inherently one-dimensional and exists onlyto fight, in hopes of finding somebody that can actually beat him. He's similar to Psi in a lot of ways, and causes everyone in the immediate area to hallucinate, making everything look like living flesh and steel whenever he's around like some kind of twisted heavy metal album cover. Of course, that's exactly what I'm looking for - some Heavy Metal (though I'll accept a Power Metal track too) where the intensity basically screams FUCK YOU YOU'RE DEAD whenever it plays. Devastus' Hate Machine pretty much nails it, to be honest. I'd also like some creepy/evil synths/pads like the ones heard in Metaljonus' Zhoxu, but I'm happy with just plain Metal if that's all you feel like doing.

Metal Coat

Shop owner later turned protagonist. Suffice to say he has a slightly creepy aura about him just by the way he looks, but he's not actually that bad - just extremely blunt, cynical and pessimistic. He'll often comment on the cliches of others to the extent of breaking the fourth wall. He's a prick, to put it bluntly, and one loaded to the brim with mechanical weaponry at that. We had in mind some kind of mixture between this and this for his theme - using the techno themes and steady drums from the former, and mixing it with the slower pacing and tipsy melodic chiptune of the latter. Can't wait to hear the results from this one.

Ekoi

Ekoi's a relatively recent addition compared to the others, and I haven't really toyed around with him much yet. He's a shop owner specializing in high tech weaponry, possesses a shapeshifting naginata polearm, can jump ridiculously high and is competent in plant and electrical magic, but nothing personality-wise has been explored yet. In any case, Ekoi's request was difficult to process. He asked for a primarly Ska-based song with some small orchestal influences here and there - he had been using thissong as a theme prior to this, if it's any indicator what to gun for.

That's about all of them. Signups, questions, paypal detail exchanges? Post something up and we can get things organised.

I regret to tell you that your rate of 20 dollars per song is anywhere from a sixth to a tenth the normal price for low end audio work. Usually people charge about 80-140 per minute of audio. If you think about the work going in to this, you are basically paying people about 3 dollars an hour, far less then minimum wage in the states.

Lucky for you, there is a large amount of newgrounds users who are at a level where they couldnt charge for their work anyways, so maybe your standards are low enough for that to work.

Well, the aformentioned Tweaker charges 20 bucks per song 2:30 or greater, so I was just going off that. Maybe he's just extremely generous with his commisions? Fuck if I know, I'm kinda new to the paid commission scene. For the most part it was just a guideline anyway, I'm more than open to bartering if I'm convinced a Newgrounder can pump out more than 20 bucks worth of quality.

That was fast. Honestly didn't expect to get a song this quickly. I'm impressed, pretty much exactly what I was imagining for Dread. Thanks a lot. =D

Ekoi? I know that guy, wtf lol. Tell him I say hi, he'll recognize the name.

Anyway.

I went through your list and none of my stuff is of any use to you, but maybe you could reconsider one of your character's themes (Suzaku, perhaps?) because I think this song would do him justice.

Awakening matches the awakening of a demon and might inspire dread, aye?

It's pretty cool, but not exactly what I'm looking for. I'll catch up with the character's owner and see what he thinks of it. Thanks for the effort though!

So I noticed a lot of people are just posting their previous work to what closest matches the requests so far. Not that I'm disappointed or anything, I just expected something to be tailour made to fit is all. I'll roll with it for now - at most it saves us all a lot of work, and at least it helps me narrow down exactly what I'm looking for.

I also noticed some of you are picking the same character. I'm torn as to whether I should make you guys collaborate, or to fight for the best pick. *shot*

Okay, I'm already fairly familiar with your work and yet I somehow missed this one. BY FUCK I WISH I HADN'T ASJKDHALKJSDHKJASDHJKASDHJKASHD

But seriously though, that was fucking incredible. I would have no objections to using this at all. Well, I guess I couldsay it's TOO epic but that would just be making a giant killjoy out of myself.

I'll consider this one a fallback. But you never know, someone could cover it with strings and electric guitars and come out with a winner. *shot*

That's some good jazz all right, but it just wouldn't feel Mimic enough unless the saxes were like goddamned machineguns. Something in higher tempo and coke-infused brass would definently have something going for it. Everything else is right at home though.

Artemis:
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/3 23595

Pacing's perfect, but it just doesn't feel cold and calculating, y'know? It's even heroicin a sense, and well, considering ol' Arty here is a villain... yeah, you can see where this is going. Needs more gritty Industrial going for it. Maybe a touch of metal if the composer feels it's appropriate.

Metal Coat:

Almostperfect. If I had to make a specific complaint, I'd say there needs to be a more pessimistic atmosphere about it, but I'm sure MC won't mind too much. The chiptune/drum combination is juuuuuuust right.

Hmm. My main issue with your stuff so far is that your percussion's a bit weak, and there doesn't really seem to be enough going on at once most of the time (as in, there's only 2-3 instruments at once, sometimes even only one, and it makes the song sound really empty). If you got over that though, you sound like you could put on a nice Techron. =P

Well, I like both of you, but I'm gonna have to side with Fire for this one. Don't let it get you down cowdog, your stuff is still wicked.

Out of the ones you posted Fire, I gotta say that Folter Arena and Vater are probably the best matches to what I imaged Nightmare to be like. More specifically, if I could get a cross between Vater's lead guitar melodies (starting 0:36 or so) and Folter's fuckin' badass riffs as a background rhythm, I'd be crying happy tears.

For the right price, you say? Name it. You definently seem to be worth it.

Oh thank god, I thought Ekoi's would be the hardest request of the lot. You're my goddamned hero now.

Obviously Ekoi understands the character and theme better than I do, so now that he's here, I'd advise listening to his requests instead if you need some direction.

Haven't really seen much Silent Hill except for the silly Uwe Boll movie, so I'm not really sure how the idea compares. The basic idea so far is that even though things change drastically in appearance, they still have some basic symbolism of what things originall were, eg: windows turning into eyeballs and whatnot. The metal bits would be something more of the bloody chromatic kind, like you'd see a lot of Brutal Legend.

Anyway, now that I've got a bit of a break, I might as well post some of the feedback I got from the peeps back home. On another note, I'll be PMing some of you to see if I can get some original material sorted.

Psycho Werekitsune, responding to Highballer's Artemis (who made a silly mistake like me and posted a seperate thread for it XD)
"Love MC's theme as well as the second Artemis one, they're pretty awesome, especially the latter. It actually kinda visualises Artemis as a character for me, and I picture this really intimidating guy in some kind of power armour being all badass and stuff. "

Kinda makes me wonder if I should forego the Industrial part entirely and just go full Celldweller style.

MC, on his own theme audition:

"Wait hang on

Homestuck inspiration, this man has good taste
Although that is where the two examples I provided came from too :V
And I think MC would be more of a Karkat than a Dave"

And in a seperate PM:

"Uh, I think it's pretty cool and I like it, but I don't know how fitting it is. The instruments and stuff are all pretty good, but it just seems a bit too (damn describding music is hard) calm maybe? I mean if I was just a robot character I think it would fit pretty well but I think for the character it should sound a bit angrier somehow, if you get what I mean. "

Pretty much what my sentiments were, actually. Sorry Solus, but looks like I'm gonna need that pessimist atmopshere after all.

Suzaku, on his own theme:
"Damn, that was an epic song. I mean, it would be a great song if nothing else comes along more suited to Suzaku."

And honestly I doubt anything will, so chances are I'll just be using the song as-is. Thanks Solus. =D

PS I have no idea how quotes work, lolol. Anyway yeah, sending out PMs next chance I get.

Homestuck inspiration? The man DOES know that Shatterface is in Homestuck, right?

hey, don't know why but for some reson i am very interested in writing some music for some characters, you can look at my stuff on my profile but the quality isnt the best on the songs however i just got new equiptment so anything i woulod make for you would be better quality, so when you listen to my music take quality out and just listen to the harmony/melody and stuff. I would write all for free and as many as you would need, im better at writing dark stuff but the stuff i have here isnt to dark because the program i had was very limiting, i can now record with actuall instruments so the quality will be very good and sound organic instead of robotic. So if you are interested post back or PM me, thanks =)

I just woke up after an upset stomach last night, so sorry if I seem a bit "out of it" today.

Went through your gallery a bit, but I'm not really feeling anything from it. Not sure what it is, maybe I just feel the melodies are a bit inconsistent and all over the place. Thanks for applying, though!

Yeah, you do that. =D

Not sure if I can offer any specific advice, you certaintly got the atmosphere right where Solus didn't. What I'd do is take something like Energy Glitch, slow the tempo down to maybe half of that, then see if you can throw in some chiptuney synths without disrupting the pessimist atmosphere too much. Keep me posted with a demo or two via PM if you can.

In other news, Sinerider finished Dread's theme and it should be up on his account soon. I've decided to accept Solus' ridiculouslyepic apocalypse thing as Suzaku's theme (pending his permission, of course), and besides the stuff you've already seen here in-thread, I've got Fire started on Nightmare's theme right now (I can only imagine how much the metalheads are anticipating thatone). I'm gonna see if I can get in contact with Highballers and see if he's still willing to do Artemis for me, but no guarantees there.

tl;dr, shit's getting done and I fucking love you guys so much for offering to help out.

Of course you can use it! I wouldn't have posted it if you couldn't.
Also, I'm gonna write something for Psi. Using this song as a guideline, what needs to be the feeling that needs to be doing?

If that makes any sense.

Suzaku

I think I'm going to try my hand at making a theme for him. Give me a couple days and I think I'll atleast have a rough idea of it, if not the entire song. I'm going to start to night.

Well, I said next couple of days, but I felt inspired, as I always seem to at 3 am. So I wrote the first part of the song I was thinking of for Suzaku, I saw the other submission, and they tended to go with a very epic feeling to it. I tried to have more of an ambient theme. I could try to make it more epic, but I had the feeling more of a "background to him walking around all evil" was more of what you were looking for. There is a theme song for him in there. This was made specifically for him, though it fit really well into a series of songs I was already making, so I was going to place it in there.

Don't get ahead of yourself just yet - I had Tysuru catch me in a PM not even an hour ago, and he has the exact bell samples I'm looking for in Psi's theme. Depending on what he chooses from, I might actually have him collab with you a bit, with you doing the trancey side and him doing a bit of orchestra featuring aformentioned bells. Would you be fine with that?

Anyway yeah, Psi's theme. Tempo definently needs to be lower for starters (wish I could give a specific BPM, but the example I posted in the OP is a good benchmark). I dunno how to describe this in electronica terms, but I'm looking for a certain kind of distortion I'm looking for in the lead synth (OP song again, around the 0:24 mark - if you happened to get a copy of ParagonX9's recent unreleased song though, it's a fantastic comparison. I have a copy of it if you haven't heard it), consisting mostly of longer, sustained notes as opposed to the brief, rapid, self-muting ones that Crystalwhatchamacallit had a lot of. A secondary synth melody that plays off the lead is probably a given for you by this point, but what I wanna do with it is mix it in with the bells so that they play sounds of similar pitch and compliment the noise. The first 10 seconds of this song pretty much demonstrates what I'm talking about perfectly.

Anyway yeah, sorry to say but I'm gonna have to ask you curb your enthusiasm a bit until Tysuru makes up his mind. Get back to me tomorrow and we'll go up from there. Besides, there's a little imagery experiment I wanted to try out, maybe the both of you can benefit from it? =)

Hate to burst your bubble mate, but Solus beat you to Suzaku's theme as of my last post. The enthusiasm is still appreciated, though!
