The problem with trying to censor the word "retard" is that it has nonoffensive meanings which although uncommon are still used. "B****" used to mean a female dog, but no one uses it in that context anymore. "N*****" has only ever had one meaning. But "retard" can not be so easily removed, especially where it applies as a scientific term.
Besides, if you remove "retard," you have to take "stupid" and "idiot" with it, as well as "moron," "imbecile," "nitwit," "dummy," "delinquent," "ignoramus," and any other word implying a lack of intelligence regardless of who it is used against. And good luck with that.
None of you understand the importance of this, this is a very hurtful word, it has caused so much pain.

This is really a no win sitaution on either side, because if you argue to keep the word retard, then people will still find ways to bitch and moan about the word, and it would be taboo to even say the word outside of a private residence, not to mention the obvious abuse of the word among people with limited dictionaries, saying the word retard or retarded in a different defenition {i.e. The new tax hike is retarded.}
On the other side of the coin, there is no way to eliminate that word out of the dictionaries, wheather it is for a mentally challanged person, or someone saying retard as an insult. Retard is much like the word Gay, because people have changed it's way of saying it in a different light.
Examples given:
"Hey John, Did you know that Dave is gay now?" would be the standard use of the word gay.
"This show was fucking gay" would be the abstract use of the word.
There is no real way to stop using words like retard or gay, or other obsenities that I won't metion here, because they have been part of the American lanaguage and lexicon for so long now, there is nothing we can do to not use those words anymore. People will find different ways of saying certain words, just so they can avoid any possible backlash with the victim, while expressing their point.

I personally agree that the R-word should be removed from everyday speech. The word's definition has been horribly twisted into something that can be considered insulting. I'm not saying to get rid of the entire word forever: its usage in scientific texts for its literally meaning, I believe, is okay. But the use of it in ordinary speech (used interchangably with "stupid", or as an insult) can be offensive.
The technical definition of a retard is a person with an IQ equal or less than 70, and may need some help in order to be able to live an ordinary life. Compare this to the average (about 100), and a genius (140+). I'm okay with the term "retard" being used in the technical definition, but not in its "urban" definition (equivalent to "stupid", or as an insult).
I think the protest against the word "retard" is just a protest against the use of the word as an insult. I personally agree that the word should not be used outside of its technical definition, so I will be taking the pledge. I hope all of you take it, too.

I have really never considered "retard" to be a bad word. When was the last time this was bleeped on TV? There is like not a single public station that lets the f-word go unbleeped, yet they say "retard" all the time. There are tons of movies that use the f-word every few seconds, and why are they allowed to do it? F*ck is considered the most profane word of all, but if we banned that, then 90% of all stand-up comedians would lose their material and jobs!

I don't recall using that word in a disparaging way against someone who's actually mentally disabled -- it's just a convenient word to use for 'stupid' and has much more force than simply calling someone an idiot. Fun fact: 'idiot' and 'imbecile' were also used to describe people of low intelligence, but nobody called for the banning of those words -- and both survive today as a general term for someone you think lacks intelligence.

Has this ever even been bleeped on TV? I hear people saying this word all the time on national television and I don't hear anybody complain about it. The f-word is the only real word that is consistently censored on every mainstream channel I know of.
