I have tried many a time but its hard to recreate his almost clustered mix sound. anyone have any insight into what samples/vsts he uses?
The techniques he uses?

Step 1.) Make a giant, pedo-like mouse head out of house hold materials.
Step 2.) Go to personal music workstation and start up your DAW.
Step 3.) Make music as normal.
Done!
The Main Thing is to keep the Main, Thing the Main Thing.

You're already way better than him. Why kick yourself down several notches to his level?

I would maybe start with the samples that he created and released publicly for everyone to use, and go from there.
Also, you have to be Canadian.

Deadmau5 has an incredible control room and is on good terms with a number of great mixing engineers besides himself....his mixes are the only thing I like about him infact.
That said, bright and thick sounds, good use of white noise, and many layers of side chains (not just many sounds going through one side chain, rather to each their own).
The kick is another crucial part, you will notice deadmau5 recycles his kicks a lot. For that style of kick to work really well it has to have a lot of power without any grunge, and it has to have a sharp attack.
I usually try to measure the attack of the kick so that I can set my compressor to perfectly boost everything else in it. Come to think of it, my best kicks are always supper compressed with lots of post gain.
Good use of plucks sounds with lots of automations for parameters like release, and filter cuttoff.
I think the most helpful way to do it though, is to just recreate some of his songs. Emulation is always the best first step in my opinion. So do some A/B comparisons as your produce the track, dont just do it by memory.

Post gain?? I thought for drums in general pre gain led to much more punch and less mushiness/over distortion/clipping.

the gain knob on most compressors is post gain...the signal level fed into the compressors can be anything if the compressor is set right. that aside, my mentioning of gain was pointless. He knows how to use a compressor just fine

He's good at mixing down and all that but his music is so easy to imitate!

I'm pretty sure he solely relies on hardware for compression etc.

+1
Marcus Schossow proved this point himself.
Never liked his music. Minimalist house is a particularly boring genre IMHO.
