Hopefully Australia would obtain one of the two countries for the world cup. That would be pretty sweet

:(

But they'll have another chance for the 2026 and 2030 world cups in due course.

It'll happen!

Not that I care all that much, but Russia have just been announced as the winners of the 2018 World Cup Bid.

What a fucking joke. England have lost it on the politics. I wasn't too happy with the timing of the Panorama programme, but I hope now we've lost it our media fucking destroy the bastards.

That would make me care about it a little more, if the cup did contain vodka.

The winner of the 2022 World Cup Bid has just been announced as Qatar.

Yeah I am a bit disappointed too. We'll see England host in our lifetime still, just a shame it won't be in 2018.

I don't disagree with Panorama doing their sneaky little investigations but the other reason they did this was due to our bid. It was their only interest for getting involved with FIFA, and now we've paid for it.

To be fair though Russia have never hosted, in fact if I remember they said, that no country in Eastern Europe has yet, which is amazing. I'm sure they'll do a good job.

Also Qatar? Interesting.

I'll be in my mid-20s for this World Cup, such a prime age to be able to do things like that. Whenever we next get it, I'll be practically middle-aged. So gutting.

I don't disagree with Panorama doing their sneaky little investigations but the other reason they did this was due to our bid. It was their only interest for getting involved with FIFA, and now we've paid for it.

I reckon a lot of the press will now have a go at FIFA. The whole thing is so blatantly corrupt and rotten; it needs to be cleaned out and our media is the tool to do it.

To be fair though Russia have never hosted, in fact if I remember they said, that no country in Eastern Europe has yet, which is amazing. I'm sure they'll do a good job.

If it was on the merits of the bid alone, England would be far superior to Russia. There is a reason they've never hosted it. Poor infrastructure, few decent stadiums (yet), huge distances to travel, not geographically representative (no stadiums east of the Urals), and probably a bid that will only benefit a small element of Russian society, given how corrupt it is now.

England already has some of the best stadiums in the world, no development needed. Fantastic infrastructure and transport system, but with no excessive distances to travel. A population that is insanely passionate about football and would devote its entire attention to the competition. A history and a tradition for producing and attracting great players. The most profitable and the World Cup with the biggest legacy for the future, with the most invested in communities.

Clearly, politics has been the key factor.

I think its the hatred they reserve for the English, and I think when they said if you cross one of the Fifa family then you cross all of the Fifa family. Simply put, this is basically payback for the Panorama scandal. Honestly, I wouldn't be all too surprised if we got one vote.

Great

Corrupt officials awarding a lucrative opportunity to a corrupt mafia run state that's too cold for football and a coincidentally incredibely rich state with a tiny population that doesn't give a shit about football, but rather wants to show off its wealth

Seriously, savour Brazil 2014

I'd try and be gracious but the result is just incredible. Fourth place yet we clearly had the best presentation, were the safest choice and could offer the third world millions of pounds in investment.

There's clearly some sort of corruption going on.

I'm looking forward to see how the fuck we'll manage to host it in places like Rio, where the military now have become a police force, and are being threatened by these terrorist groups.

São Paulo is a nice city, and we have some good stadiums, but we do have high crime rates as well. I don't know, a lot of things will need to change in just 4 years. Hopefully we'll manage to host a pretty good WC, Brazil's always been known internationally for it's Football (Unfortunately, it's not for our doctors, engineers or anything else, just football).

At 12/1/10 01:02 PM, EjitinToadForm wrote: Also, was this a typo? They're announced tomorrow aren't they?

Yeah, it was, sorry, I didn't notice it.

Anyways, I'm glad Russia got it, as they did have a pretty good team history, and the Soviets also had the best goalkeeper in history. Though they'll probably face numerous problems as well, like most people said.

I'm disappointed with Qatar though. They showed some good stadium projects, I mean, they are really good looking, but they just seem way too much...extravagant. And what about after the WC? Will they be maintained? I highly doubt they will, Qatar seems to live mostly off oil exports, like most Arab countries, and hell, if the interest for oil goes down, so do they.

I don't know, I have my doubts.

I believe I read somewhere that Qatar's stadiums will be dismantled after tournament and 'donated', if anyone's keen on following that up.

Some of this press coverage is coming off really petty to be brutally honest. Of course Blatter et al's interest is in legacy and cash, we all knew that. Hell, South Africa had its foundations in that. And it worked too, don't deny that. Of course, some are pointing to FIFA's press trouble (and it's not just the BBC, come on, you guys know better than that) and to the fact that Russia and Qatar have comparatively low press freedom. But whatever, congrats to them. I know they're not perfect, but at least people in Russia are happy. Also, oil folk in Qatar.

Qatar are supposed to have released a reminder that alcohol usage is punishable and homosexuality is illegal there.

Quick note to those that are playing down Russia's footballing heritage. Of course it's not on par with England, I wouldn't argue that, but like a few months ago it seems that many are forgetting just how good the Eastern Bloc teams were in their primes - Hungary '54, Czechoslovakia '62, Poland '74, the USSR were often the one team automatically 'feared' by others for all sorts of reasons, etc. The Cold War didn't affect the World Cup like it did the Olympics, but there was still some great degrees of skill amongst the teams involved. Bear in mind that Poland and the Ukraine are getting the Euro tournament also.
