Fox sees Onion article as truth. 2010-11-27 17:57:54 Reply

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/11/fox-n ation-readers-confuse-onion-article-real -news/

Fox News' opinion website Fox Nation and their readers don't seem to know satire when they see it.

The Fox News sister site re-posted a joke from the satirical website The Onion Friday about President Barack Obama sending a 75,000-word e-mail to the the entire nation. At no point does Fox Nation note that the story is a satire.

The Onion story joked that Obama had "reached the end of [his] rope" and sent out the "rambling" stream of : consciousness e-mail that addressed everything from the war in Afghanistan to his live-in mother-in-law.

The story goes on to say that the fake Obama e-mail was 27 megabytes and 127 printed pages.

If Fox Nation knows the story is a joke, they aren't letting on, and many of the comments on the post treat the : story as if it were actual news.

It can get hard to tell them apart at times.

Fox news has various levels of bullshit,
sometimes they do make a good point, but alot of the time it's just unresearched hunches and propaganda... it's the conservative msnbc but slightly worse.

jeez that's pretty bad.... just as bad as the time the BBC asked for a Bob Marley interview..... 24 years after he died. These news companies need to be more careful about validating their information before they try to make it news.

seriously. that's a rather epic failure on Fox's part... and of course every liberal site is going to rip into em for the blunder.

I'm not crazy, everyone else is.

Fox ''news'' isn't a news channel, it's a comedy show. And sometimes, it's actually pretty funny.

The above post is useless.

Onion is funny, but they write so seriously that these incidents are GOING TO HAPPEN!

They shouldn't happen.
Unfortunately, The Onion doesn't have a disclaimer saying that their content is meant as comedy and their tagline is "America's Finest News Source," so it's all too easy for (stupid) people to take them seriously.

Took the words right out of my mouth. ANY responsible news agency (no matter their bias) should be checking on the validity and factual nature of ANY story they report before reporting it. The Onion is a pretty well known satire site, so if someone was going to quote The Onion as news, they'd best make DAMN sure that what they're reporting actually is news.

The problem for FOX is the consistency and totality with which they tend to fuck up.

Fine, but I'm sick of all these idiots who seem to think Fox is the only station that is capable of fucking up. It's bullshit! Everyone fucks up once in a while, it's human.

nobody actually said that Fox is the only station capable of fucking up. shouting "b-b-but MSNBC did it too!!!" is not going to make this mistake go away.

and as far as the mistake MSNBC made is concerned, from your link:

In late March 2004, Deborah Norville of MSNBC presented as genuine an article titled "Study: 58 Percent Of U.S. Exercise Televised"

that particular story doesn't concern anything political, while the story Fox Nation ran does, seeing as it concerns President Obama. perhaps i'm being pedantic here (i mean, they did both quote the onion!), but i'm not quite sure that the exact same mistake was made here.

as avie said, it does not matter what your political leanings are, fact-checking is still extremely important.

I don't really care about it as a mistake itself, but it seems to me that every time Fox News screws up, every fucking time, it's while promoting conservatives or attacking liberals.

2. From MSNBC's mistake, 58% of all us exercise televised... REALLY?! What kind of retard would believe that?

I'm prettyyyy sure that first one sounds much more bullshit than the latter. For one thing, number uno is a wholehearted attack on the president. Number 2 isn't gonna affect anyone's approval ratings much.

1. I don't remember stuttering. :P

i was merely summarizing one of your posts, namely, bringing up an incident from 2004 involving MSNBC failing at fact-checking in a thread about Fox Nation, which is, as you know, related to Fox News.

2. look back through the posts, lots of dipshits are saying EXACTLY that.

really? let me look over this thread....

nope, nobody said that.

besides, anyone smart knows that everyone makes mistakes. there really isn't any need to state the obvious.

and as far as the mistake MSNBC made is concerned, from your link:

In late March 2004, Deborah Norville of MSNBC presented as genuine an article titled "Study: 58 Percent Of U.S. Exercise Televised"

that particular story doesn't concern anything political,
are you shitting me?

what? is exercise political now? i thought it was just a fun and healthy activity! damn, i need to pay attention more :P

but seriously, that particular article, just mentions that supposed study. i don't get how anyone fell for that though.

perhaps i'm being pedantic here
NO SHIT!

(i mean, they did both quote the onion!), but i'm not quite sure that the exact same mistake was made here.
No, it's worse.

1. From Fox's mistake, Obama writing a big-ass letter, I might be able to see that. Improbable, but not impossible. The problem here is the reporter has never heard of the Onion. (Yes, a fact-check WAS necessary, but onion articles always look deceptively professional to people who haven't heard of it.)

maybe you might be able to see that, but as this screenshot of the story and some of the comments show, most of the commenters fell for it.

the story on Fox nation and the comments associated with it have apparently been taken down. i have not heard of any retractions or any statements mentioning that they've been duped though.

2. From MSNBC's mistake, 58% of all us exercise televised... REALLY?! What kind of retard would believe that?

apparently just Deborah Norville, but i can't say who else fell for it at the time.

but as far as what's worse, lets have a look...

the first one concerns a fake story about the president. this story portrays him in a rather unflattering light, and if this was true, could possibly affect his image. this story was passed off as real, and as shown in the screenshot i linked to, most (but not all!) fell for it.

the other just concerns some fake study about exercise in this country that was passed off as real, that article was not political in nature, and shouldn't do very much damage to anyone's political leanings.

as avie said, it does not matter what your political leanings are, fact-checking is still extremely important.
Agreed, but the double-standard is fucking rampant.

haha, wow. i disagree with you there, but that's another topic for another thread.
