Alrighty, so. As before don't post until I'm finished posting just so the result is that much cleaner, and the same goes for Numi once he gets in. Aside from that, don't get discouraged by these results, since I'm the only result thus far, we will have no idea which way things will go until Numi gets here. And don't for get that the runner up will be moving on as well, so the final results as of now are a complete mystery to all of us. So please try and be patient.
On that note: Usually the composition period begins the day the results are out. So I move that we should hold the starting point of the next composition period till Black Friday. No point in making every body loose a day or two to the holidays just because of timing and that fact that you've all had to wait extra anyway.
Enough gab, onto the results...
Results for Round 2
RetromanOMG - 8-Bit Spaceships - 82/100
8-bit is always very black and white for me. It's either really good or really good. This one gravitates toward the good (no pun intended). I like it even more when it evolves to a higher level of thinking like this did. But I would have liked the progression to be a little more pronounced and spontaneous. The panning was fitting for the entrance for the drums but was unnecessary to continue it during climaxes and the like. I did however find the combination of the high frequency filtering and panning together, but as before it was not needed for high tension sections of the song. The melodies, while somewhat static and repetitive, where clear and clean. As far as instrumentation goes, nothing seemed particularly out of place, but in the future try to add slightly more contrast with in defining melodic instruments. Nice work.
Sirdangolot5 - Aurora - 74/100
Watch out on the hihats. For this style of progressive house, it's important to be much more relaxed and not to sharp with the listener. Most might say that splashy hats are not the best choice but in this case they are, just make sure they are as actuate as possible and it will make everything mesh better. I don't want to dwell on the hats to much but one last thing would be to try and stay from tonal open hats, in some cases they can sound somewhat toy-ish and cheesy. The chord progression is very enjoyable to hear. Very crisp and unique. I love how it can shift to other parts of the song without an abrupt change of direction or mood like most songs. Other than, try to make your pattern transitions a little more interesting, mostly because there really weren't any to begin with.
paradimensional - Rungadm round 2 - 79/100
I would have to say that there really is nothing to describe it or compare it to. I did think it got a little repetitive after sometime. Even after the drum solos and trumpets, which by the way where very well done, where very out of place. It seemed like something did indeed need to go there to contrast to the chorus per say, but the change in emotion was too sudden. Try to progress from one part to the next more smoothly. The instrumentation was fabulous and everything complemented everything else extremely well. Very unique work that I almost can't put words to.
Solus - Apocalypta -85/100
The emotion was spot on. Not only in the sense of achieving the desired feeling at a given time but also in not lingering on any single for to long. Speaking of long... Nah jk. The length wouldn't have bothered me as much if it hadn't seemed like you didn't need all that time. The length of any song is dependant on the song itself. However much time it takes to state your point is the time the length of the song should fit, no more, no less. It allows the listener to not get bored in this case, the other side of the spectrum being not fulfilling the song in it's entirety. And while the length was somewhat of an issue, the ending does provide quite a bit of closure to the entire piece. As it should considering the song is about "ending" itself.
MazinMark - Awakening - 62/100
The name and song emotion in mind don't quite fit together. By about half way through the song I thought maybe I was starting to understand what you were going for, but even after finishing it I'm not very sure. You should try to convey a certain feeling(s) and how well it translates to the listener is the measure of how good it is. As far as technicalities go, the song seemed very minimal. Not a lot going on. Everything that was present was fine when it came to be, but I feel more should be added as the song grows even more awake than it did before (pun intended).
firemaker60 - Alternate Dream ~ Saint's Real - 67/100
The piano was very soft and very gentle, great stuff. The drum inner workings were a little strange. It also somewhat applies to the rest of the song for the most part. But its hard to say if they are necessarily bad or not. Because when purely listening to them out of context, its sounds very sloppy and a lack of effort put into them. But when placed in a game and used in context, it can be viewed as suited perfectly. So this is more of an apology if I can't grade it completely fairly as that I can only really listen to it out of context in order to compare results. Maybe once its were it should be I can really hear it the way it's meant to be heard.
I-Saved-The-World - Videogame - 64/100
The chord progression was very good. I also liked all the instruments that backed it up and really brought out what you were trying to tell the listener. There are some major issues, though. There certainly isn't very much going on, so it became very repetitive by the beginning of the outro. I felt myself constantly waiting and hoping for something new to happen besides some Ok pattern transitions and filtered builds. I also think that it was a little to slow BPM wise. If maybe it was a little faster it would make it a little more exciting to listen to even when it starts to get monotonous and help it over come its minimalism problem.
jpbear - Delve (NG mix) - 56/100
Most of the time, outstretched progressions like this one are frowned upon. But this is only because of their length, not because of their content. In this case, it was a necessary progression in which I didn't have to worry about getting anxious for the climax. It's also apparent that it doesn't "feel" like outwards three minutes. There was on major issues though. Towards the middle-end during the climax, there is a muffled/dry kick like hit on the upbeats (alternating position) that was annoyingly and excruciatingly out of place. And I hate to say it but pretty much ruined the entire song, including that extremely well done opening progression, for me.
LogicalDefiance - Deadly Schemes - 71/100
The opening was very awkward. It didn't connect with the rest of the song very well. They didn't even feel like the same song. I also don't think the 6/8 directive of 4/4 (aka the "swing") was necessary for the song. It made it appear kind of messy and klutzy. The bass was were it needed to be as far as quality goes, but I wish it maybe had been a little bit harder (the bassline, not the kick). Don't get me wrong, all of the pieces of the song were pretty good, it's just that none of them fit together as they could have. It's not that the song is bad, but really unfulfilling. It seems like so much more could have been done with it.
HexMonkey - Path to Enlightenment - 91/100
At first glance, the song seemed like it was going to go in a strange direction from the opening, but instead it took the path I thought it would (pun DEFINITELY not intended). The contrast between parts was unique and interesting. It's got a little bit of everything. It's calm and collected, all while having a swift and effortless motion to it. Not much I can say to the contrary, great work.

Workin' on it. Just got home from school. I only have mazinmark's song left to review, then I'll throw together my posts and average our scores to make it easy for the participants. Gimme a few and it'll be all set.

8-bit Spaceships
SCORE - 89/100
Orgasmic. Simply orgasmic. I don't have much to say about this, because I really can't find much wrong with it. The melodies (though they didn't really evolve) were quite good. They were pretty easy to follow. They sounded good. That's all the matters. The drums, nigh perfect. Everything about them was fantastic except one thing - the constant panning back and forth, it bothered me after a while. had the panning not been going back and forth the entire time, I'd have liked it a lot more. It was just... cheesy, for lack of a better word? Overall, fantastic job though.
Sirdangolot5
Aurora
SCORE - 84/100
Pretty chill. I liked it, One thing I've gotta ask though - I don't know much about House - but how can this be called progressive house if it stays basically the same the whole song? Don't get me wrong, it sounded pretty sweet, but it barely changed. And that's why your score suffered a bit here. I felt like I was listening to a loop. A fantastic loop, but a loop nontheless. I'd say just change things up a little. Add another pattern. Even two. Anything to break the repetition of a single pattern and you'll be golden.
paradimensional
RUNGADM R2
SCORE - 72/100
I'm not getting much of a hybrid of genres here, this almost has a touhou feel to it. ...or maybe I'm insane. But anyway, there was one BIG flaw with your track. The main melody was absolutely abused. It just didn't stop. Now, it's a nice little beat - it would serve quite well as an intro, or a bridge, or something of that nature, but to have it go on and on the whole track was rather repetitive, especially given how short it is. Though I must commend your effort on the song. The rest sounds fantastic. The breaks from that melody are wonderful. The drum solos, the drop starting around 2:10, it's boss. Top notch stuff there - but the same lead being repeated over and over and over and over and over... it just killed the track for me.
SolusLunes
Apocalypta
SCORE - 97/100
One word comes to mind when I hear this - "powerful". It sounded cinematic. It got a real variety of imagery going in my mind - a battlefield before a conflict, two armies staring each other down - ruins of the world after a catastrophic event - pretty powerful stuff. Real tense. You're a real pro at this, Solus. I can't say I really found anything wrong with it. It's just badass. All 7 and a half minutes of it. <3
Sorry I can't give suggestions/tell you what I liked/disliked, I really liked every bit of it. I mean it.
MazinMark
Awakening
SCORE - 75
I can't even tell you how many times I listened to the track. i really can't. I don't like it, but I don't dislike it. I don't know why virtually everything about it is neutral to me. The samples you used are fine. The melodies are fine. The structure is fine. The instruments are fine. Everything compliments everything else well enough. I honestly have NO idea why I don't like/dislike anything about this. It's weird...
I apologize for the shitty review, I don't mean to be so... out there and nonspecific, but I really can't pinpoint anything about the song. Nothing good, nothing bad. Sorry.. :c
Firemaker60
Saint's Dream
SCORE - 64/100
As far as the melodies go, they're alright, aside from a few sour notes here and there, just places the different parts didn't seem to compliment each other. The piano seemed a little random, but that's probably just me. As for sounds, the acoustic guitar sounds a bit wrong. I can tell it's fake. Idk if that was intended or not, but it just sounds sort of lame in this piece. Having the same melody for the guitar didn't really help much either. Overall, the song sounds empty. It's missing something. Both structurally and sound-wise. Something needs to happen - it just sounds.. boring. As for the sound, I'd suggest a bass, or thickening the sounds you used. It feels like there's so much empty space.
ISTW
Videogame
SCORE - 78
The intro wasn't very fitting - this particular melody didn't quite fit with a fade-in intro. Although it was catchy, I don't feel there's anything in this song that sticks out. Nothing too original. Thought all the melodies probably haven't all been arranged exactly like this before, I feel as though I've eard every one of them a hundred times. The chords that came in around 1:00 from then on were pretty boss though. My favorite element of the song. Though I must say the pingy noise in the drum beat got to me after awhile. I wanted to punch something on my fourth listen.
jpbear
Delve
SCORE - 80
I really disliked this until it picked up around 3:00. There was just nothing going on to attract my attention. Idk why, but all I could think of for the whole three minutes was bubbles. It sounded almost like an underwater sort of themed track. But it was just bubbles. For three minutes. Bubbles aren't the most interesting thing in the world. Once it does kick in though, it gets pretty cool. I'm not big on house or any of it's subgenres, so I can't really accurately review this. But I can say the track fills in quite nicely. It builds on itself, fills in the emptiness of the beginning. Grabs my attention, it's something I'd totally want to just kick back to after a long day.
LD
Deadly Schemes
SCORE - 75
It had a nice cinematic feel to the orchestral intro. Tense. Spooky. Gotta love that shit, especially in dubstep. Once the wobbles came in, I waslike "YEAH! This is pretty boss." Something was off the whole time though. On the second listen I realized, the whole song seems too fast. Like, WAY too upbeat for a dubstep song. Another thing, the high pitched dance lead was okay when it was real slow for a few seconds, it was simple, not technical, added to the mood. It added to the eeriness. But once It got fast and complex, it just clashed with every other sound in the song, and contrasted every feeilng everything else had set up so far.
HexMonkey
Path to Enlightenment
SCORE - 95
Fantastic. Utterly fantastic. Nothing's out of place. It's a beautiful track. All the instruments and sounds you used were ideal for the track. They all complimented each other. Nothing seemed out of place. The melodies were great. It wasn't too fast, it wasn't too slow. Everything just... belonged. Everything was buttery smooth. My only complaint is it's a bit short. Not really a big problem, you still pulled this off beautifully. I'm glad you've been able to "enlighten" me =D

wheww.... that was close thanks for the pick up score numi. Good work in your Tohou style song firemaker(even though its pretty out of my comfort zone)
Ive gotta say though, yall should definetly take how well the mix sounded in consideration more.
And VG songs(i could argue that they shouldnt even be allowed in most cases), should be VERY harshly analyzed due to the fact that mixing tends to be MUCH easier when theres just about no low end in a song. And cheesy fl presets should be frowned upon as well(not going to mention any names)......
And DJintheDark, what upbeat drum? If you mean the "snare"(which was first layered with a clap, then spread?). The people i asked said it was one of the best parts about the song(take a listen to xkore's housey stuff for something similair).
Oh btw in the SAT, if theres more than a letter difference between judges(10 points), it goes to a third judge as well... (this has happened in both rounds to me so far by opposite judges).
So sorry for playing devil's advocate i just thought it was necessary. Thanks for putting the time in to even do this contest in the first place.

No, not the snare. After listening to it a little louder, I'm pretty surer it's the bass. It almost sounds like part of the kick, but missing part of the kick as well. If your still not sure what I'm talking about here is a small section of it and then here is the isolated sound that is the problem itself. After you know what it sounds like, go back and listen to the entire section of the song and listen for it. Also, I know what xKore sounds like, kind of weird for you to think I don't.

Uhm.. there haven't been any matchups. Oops. Sorry gaiz.
Unless DJInTheDark has any opposition to this, I just kind of threw some random matches together. As he said last round, the scores are what matters, not style. So those who would've won or lost against thought out pair-ups, will still eventually win or lose.
Paradimensional VS Sirdangolot5
jpbear VS RetromanOMG
HexMonkey VS SolusLunes
Like I said, I'm waiting for DJITD to confirm that he's cool with these. Don't assume they're valid matchups until he posts his say.
