Ngadm '10 Round 3 Results 2010-11-23 15:42:19 Reply

I think I teased you guys enough. Here's the long-awaited Round 3 results of the NGADM! Songs were awesome this time round, and I downloaded almost all of them. There were some close calls in this round, which is expected in later rounds in a knockout competition of this size. Great job to everyone, a successful round all in all, despite yet another delay, er... tension builder.

You guys know the drill. Don't post anything until I give the go-ahead which will be after I post all the judges' results and the final results/deadlines (which by the way have been changed accordingly). Turns out if we don't delay again, you guys will be getting the final results as a Christmas Eve present.

One tiny thing: remember that in all the rush I made called the last thread 'NGADM '10 Round 3 Results' when it should have been Round 2 Results, so don't be surprised if the titles of the threads are the same.

Without further ado, the results!

RESULTS - SUPERSTEPH54

1.) Bjra vs aliaspharow

SUMMARY: Great, for one of your first attempts!

REVIEW:
Like in your last submission, this track is a strong reminder of classic Video Game tunes, except this time it's very similar to an RPG of some sort. The atmosphere is awesome, and the general feel of the track is that of adventure. It's impressive for one of your first attempts.

Starting with the melodies, they were all catchy and memorable. My favourite melody would without doubt be the one at 0:38. The repeat of it at 1:11 in a different key was a genius idea and the transition to it was epic. Speaking of that, the transitions were all nicely done and smooth. The song was well structured and every section was enjoyable. I particularly liked the staccato strings in the background. Not only did they provide a decent background to compliment the track, but they had a very RPG-like feel to them, which would make any listener feel a sense of nostalgia. Additionally, the choirs were a nice touch. As a recap, the atmosphere, melodies, transitions, instruments and the general feel was sublime.

Unfortunately, assuming this is because this isn't your primary genre, I'm not going to lie; it's not as impressive as your other submissions so far. The intro sounds very artificial (probably due to the lack of different note velocities and the same length for every note [except, naturally, the trill towards the end of the intro]). I think you should give this a calmer intro, and then slowly build up to the RPG feel you've got going, provided that looping this isn't absolutely necessary. Lastly, the percussion is lacking. Sure, the gongs were well placed, but the only percussion I can hear are some gongs, a repetitive and bland tambourine every half-bar and a few gongs, and some congas/bongoes which are too drowned out in the mix to compliment the track at all. Sorry, but I think the percussion here sounded extra, rather than something that compliments the song, which was also quite short too...

Overall, considering you're new to the genre, this is a great track. I'm probably being way too harsh by giving you an 8.5/10, but to be honest I don't think this matches up to some other classical submissions. That being said, there's no doubt that this is a really enjoyable track, and I'm sure that making classical a little more will prove to be very fruitful. And heck, at least you had the balls to try something new :P.

SUMMARY: Cool stuff.

REVIEW:
It's really typical of you to make a long-ass song with an amazing mix and awesome production, isn't it? Well this is a very good track and it shows that you definitely have a lot of experience when it comes to this genre. Love it!

Like I already said, the first thing I noticed was how well mixed this is. Everything is so crisp and clear, and there's no noticeable clipping either (well at least there isn't any according to my ears... ear...). But yeah, the mix is ridiculously well-made :P. The melodies were all catchy and interesting, and the melody evolved just about enough to keep me interested for the five and a half minutes that this song plays for. Structure was decent as well, and the transitions were all amazingly smooth. Got to say, this sounds pretty relaxing.

Now, I have one main problem with this, which ate a whole point and a half off your score. It sounds like your typical trance song. The bass arp, the intro, the sounds, the outro, the structure, the constant sweep rhythm in the background, everything. It sounds almost predictable, I'm afraid. I mean, if you take for instance your first submission, Breath, it has that long and deep ambient part. Broken Flow had that unique piano sound too. But Gaze, despite sounding the most well-produced from the three, sounds pretty generic. It doesn't really have anything which makes you go 'wow, that's new!' if you get what I mean. Lastly, if I had to nitpick, then in my opinion the drums were a bit repetitive.

And that's it from me. Like I already mentioned, you're very talented at mixing, but I think this lacks anything that makes it new or unique. But hey, I can see that you worked very hard on it, and it's still an excellent song. Keep up what you're doing, man!

SCORE: 8.5/10

SUMMARY: Ridiculously atmospheric, although some structure problems...

REVIEW:
As usual, the imagery you evoke is just amazing. I very easily imagine a violent and rough sea pounding its waves onto some poor ship lost in the middle of an ocean. Despite your usual length of four to five minutes, it still kept my interest for a number of play-throughs. Excellent job.

Obviously, the most amazing aspect of this would be its incredible atmosphere. The constant ambiance and pads in the background contrasted greatly with the booming and echoing drums in the background, creating a deep yet powerful atmosphere. I've got to say, that's just brilliant. I particularly liked the reverb you put on the drums. It was just right; not too wet but not too dry, and this further helped that superb atmosphere. That synth you used to play the melody in the second portion of the song was just... wow. So unique, and still an amazing sound. Seriously, that thing gave me the goosebumps. Percussion on the whole was sublime, and the beat was fantastic (but as a minor nitpick I'll say that I think that the open hat gets annoying after a while - maybe using a few different samples which vary slightly in sound, and possibly turning its volume down too). Lastly, the transitions were extraordinary, especially the one at 3:52.

Now that I've complimented you enough, I'll say what my one main problem with this track is. The first half of the song was entirely devoted to building up a booming atmosphere, and then the drums become very minimal and soft all of a sudden and you have a very long and draggy melody which sounds as if it's building up to something amazing which never comes. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that melody, and the synth just makes it all the better, but the second half sounded pretty anti-climatic. This led to a pretty weird structure, in my opinion. My suggestion is to add the main pounding drum beat to the melody at 2:41 or so, and build up by adding new sounds from there. Also, try to keep the melody from sounding too anti-climatic, since there were a number of instances where the melody sounds like it's ended, but continues and sounds very anti-climatic.

As you can see, my only problem with this would be its structure. To be honest the structure didn't really appeal to me that much, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed this song. Excellent work!

SUMMARY: Brilliant, but needs more electronic influences.

REVIEW:
Love it! In my opinion this is one of the most enjoyable submissions of this round. Some things in this track struck me as unique, namely the techno/electronic influences, warp effects/ambiance in the background, and the voice somewhere in the first bit of the track. Great work.

Like I already said, I liked the use of techno effects. Fit very well with the whole time-travel theme, and if you didn't add any techno effects then I don't think you would've gotten such a high score from me. The riffs were nicely varied with great transitions to glue them together. Probably my favourite part would be the part at around 1:00. While the transition to that part was a slight bit anti-climatic, it was still very enjoyable, especially that cool guitar in the background. The mix was also pretty decent. I'm not going to lie; your tracks are some of the best metal tracks I've heard on NG!

Now to issue my complaints. Starting with the use of electronic influences, I really think that this could do with some more, to fill in some parts in the song which might sound a bit empty. The electronic influences were all around the treble range with no easily recognisable bassey techno sounds which in my opinion could really make this submission better. It's a shame to have such a little amount of electronic influences when they were probably one of the best things about this track. Lastly, the intro was a tad bit uninteresting and generic. Starting this with some electronic ambient effects and the introducing the guitar later on would've been awesome.

As you can see, my main problem with this would be the lack of electronic influences. I think the song would be so much better with more electronic effects and sounds here and there to not only make this song sound more original and give it more depth, but also make it fit more with the name. Still, what can I say, this is awesome.

SCORE: 8.5/10

SUMMARY: Ahh, very trailer-like.

REVIEW:
Wow, this is one hell of an impressive track. No wonder Spikrodd was so anxious for the results :P. But yeah, I must admit that even if I wasn't such a fan of this genre, I still would've enjoyed it. It sure has that epic sound to it, and even if you made it for a trailer, I can see that you also made this sound good on its own, even if it has its defects. Nice job.

Probably the one thing that really impressed me would be the awesome intro. Like in your other song, it's a pretty generic approach for an intro, but it worked very well. I also liked those tremolo/trill buildup thingies at 0:20 and 1:40-ish. God, I sound so noobish :P. But yeah, they worked really well! The instruments sound very nice too, especially the choirs at the beginning. The choir staccatos later on in the song were admittedly not as convincing, but heck, I complain too much. Melodies were nice, and the whole feel of the song was pretty tense and trailer-like, especially that ending.

That being said, this still sounds a lot like it'll fit better as trailer score rather than a normal submission. At times it sounds pretty cluttered and the structure wasn't the best (this was more apparent in the first half of the song). For instance, the transition at 0:44 took quite a long time to come in, and it sounds like it's forced. I'm sure it works well in that trailer, but as a standalone song this could be better. Don't get me wrong; like I already said, I can see that you tried to make this sound like a standalone song too, and you did a good job too, but unfortunately it still doesn't sound that good on its own, I'm afraid. Also, the song lacks depth, in my opinion. Everything sounds directly in the foreground, without any subtle things in the background which make me want to listen to this again. Lastly, the song sounds pretty generic, although I won't really take down the score for that, since it's not easy to make a non-generic score for a trailer.

Although I've complained more than I've complimented, this is still a good track. Good job on it, man!

SUMMARY: So I finally get to review one of your tracks...

REVIEW:
...and I've got to say, I'm really, really impressed. It's a shame everyone oddly dropped out against you so far, because you're one hell of an epic competitor and a really talented producer. Stop assassinating your opponents, dammit :P. All in all, I really enjoyed this submission.

I'll start with what I enjoyed most, and that would be the percusison. There are so many complex beats and effects on them that the drums sound like a whole song in themselves. My point is that I can listen to the drums on their own and probably not get bored. Another thing that I particularly liked would be the intro. The detuned and dissonant synth, slow drum beat, cool effects... superb. The intro actually had quite a bit of tension in it, which was let out really well at 0:35, with a nice transition. The production is great, and all of the transitions were well-executed, particularly those seemless transitions from one time signature to another. The outro came in a bit unexpectedly, but fits nicely and leads to an awesome and satisfying ending.

My only main gripe with this would be the lack of a definable melody. That doesn't necessarily make this song boring, since your drums, effects, time signatures and unique sounds make this track pretty original and interesting, but I don't really have anything to remember this by except a notable amount of dissonance. Some melody on top of what you have now would be a great addition, in my opinion, or at least something to remember this by.

As an overall conclusion, I'll say that this track was extremely enjoyable and unique, and what it lacks in melodic elements, it definitely gains in all the other amazing aspects of this song. Fantastic job!

SUMMARY: Sounds very rushed, unfortunately :(.

REVIEW:
I don't know if it's just me, but in my opinion this sounds pretty rushed. The sounds you used were awesome and the production is good, but this is pretty short and quite repetitive, to be honest. Still, as always, it sounds fun to listen to, so good job there.

Starting off with the good things about the track, I'll say that the sounds you used were very fitting, and the synth that played in the second bit of the song not only sounded superb but also played a nice melody. The intro was great and it started the song off nicely, which led to a good progression and smooth transitions to the main theme. One thing which I particularly liked would be the cool mix between the 8-bit-ish sounds and the dubstep elements. Even though this sounds a bit rushed, you still managed to give it that awesome sound to it. Nice job on the stuff I mentioned.

Having said that, this song is very short and quite repetitive. You repeated some patterns quite a few times, namely in the second bit of the song, and it started getting old after a while. The rhythm of the drums needs some more variety too, and I was literally begging for new rhythms. The outrowas quite bland and uninteresting as well, which is a shame because the intro was so good.

I'm being very harsh, but in my opinion, while this has a brilliant mix of 8-bit synths/sounds and dubstep elements, it does sound pretty rushed and has a plenty of potential to be improved. Still, I enjoyed it!

SUMMARY: So catchy!

REVIEW:
Orchestral, piano trance, dance, dubstep... This is just a whole mix up of different genres, and to most other songs this would end up with a cluttered and weird song, but you've perfectly executed a mix of different genres. This has seriously left me speechless, and it's one of my favourite songs submitted to the whole NGADM. Fantastic job!

The piano would probably be my favourite thing about this submission. The melody was superb, and the rhythms, as always, were very nice and varied. The intro and outro were extraordinary, especially the outro, and the dubstep influences were great too. I think the dubstep bass could've had a bit more power to it, but it was still great. The drums were great, and so was the production, although I've learnt to expect that from you now :P.

I only have one tiny nitpick, which is the mix. Sure, this is mixed really well, although I can't help but think that this lacks a bit in the bass department. A few bassey pads and maybe a bassier dubstep bass would work out (that being said, I loved the sub-bass). Oh, and at times the song does get a bit boring, and you could've introduced a few additional sounds to it here and there, but what the heck, I need to stop this bad habit of nitpicking.

Alright, that's about it. Sorry for such a tiny review, but as I said, this seriously left me speechless. Excellent job overall, and keep up the superb work man.

Battle at High Tide, by Bjra
Type: Song
Genre: Video Game

REVIEW:
Epic in its true sense. Now this is a good song. Its got a lot of potential, a lot to build on. There's good instruments, always of high quality, decent drums and a pretty original track throughout. However, it shows that you're not as experienced in classical as you are in your normal genres. The depth of instrumentation is slightly lacking, with not enough instruments providing the background layer of music for the piece. For this kind of music, a deep bass line and some chords would always work fine, as they make the song deeper, as well as adding to the atmosphere. As for melodies, i can honestly find nothing wrong with them, even if they repeated a bit too much for my tastes. Transitions in general are epicly awesome, as usual, and they never stopped the flow of the song whatsoever. Overall, great song, some minor faults, keep up the good work!

REVIEW:
Epic buildup, Epic Music. This is Genius, i can't say anymore. From magnificent introduction, to suspenseful ending, this piece deserves every piece of praise it can get. The thing i love most about this piece is that it never gets boring, now matter how many times you listen to it. The sheer amount of variety in the background, the drums, the melodies; it just blows your mind. The drums are a bit repetitive in some cases, but nothing to horrendous, so it doesn't make much of a difference. The effects make it even greater, with so much change going on in the different levels of music that you'd have to listen to this for eternity to understand it completely. I particularly liked how the outro just faded out and left the listener curious as to how it could have continued, how it could have gone on. Overall, i can say, that this song is as close to perfect as you can get. Great job!

Savage Sea, by SBB
Type: Song

Very nice indeed. This is a great song, extremely catchy, extremely calm and relaxing. Even though it was a bit bland in terms of instrumentation in some cases, especially in the background instruments, this song has everything you want in a song. The intro and outro were both great, with both packing just enough of a climax and an anticlimax respectively to make the flow of the song superb. Melodies were varied throughout, and in general there was a great sense of variety in most aspects of the song. Transitions were mostly smooth as heck, so no problems there. Drums are much better this time, as they got varied and original and yet managed to mantain a regular backdrop for the piece. So basically, the only thing i can complain about is the slight lack of depth, which ive already commented on before. Other than that, great song, loads of potential, keep it up!

REVIEW:
Not bad at all. Once again, you succeeded superbly in making the song very very energetic. The whole thing was a whole symphony of noise, wild guitars and stupendous drums. The intro instantly set off with a nice fast-paced rhytm, which you mantained quite well for the whole song. Tansitions in general were great, as were the melodies, although these got a bit repetitive at some parts. The transition into the main section was particularly great, with a good drum beat to help it along. Drums throughout most of the song were great, as they provided a nice backdrop for the music to rely on. As for Blend, the instruments blended together quite well, and there wasn't any dominance for power as is often the case with such genres. Outro was awesome as well. Overall, great song, loads of potential, keep it up!

REVIEW:
Epic beyond normal proportions. Music like this sets a fire in my soul and an ache in my heart (how dramatic). From start to finish this song is beyond great, beyond amazing. The variety, the blend, the skill with which you put the song together. It's simply fantastic. The drums are pure genius, giving just the right touch to let the music punch through to your core, while the string melody follows through with a majestic theme that simply left me begging for more. The voices too sparked a nice effect to the music, giving it a high sense of tension and hope blended together to provide epicness. The melodies were great, as were the climaxes, the transitions and the different themes. I particularly liked the use of the scratching strings which gave the music a high sense of expectation. I can honestly see this being played in a movie, it would fit in perfectly. Great job!

Jealous One, by Spikrodd

REVIEW:
Very nice. Variety is the strong point of this piece, right down to the time signature, you changed mostly everything; melodies, drums, backgrounds, rhytm. I can't say that it worked perfectly everywhere, but it certainly was a nice break from hearing some melody repeated over and over again. The transitions in general were fine, even if there were a lot of them. The first time signature change wasnt executed quite so well, but you picked up superbly after that, with a nice cross between dubsteph and glitch. As for the blend, the music is definetely nicely laid out, the atmosphere you created is great and eerily creepy. It might have used a tad bit of a stronger bass, but other than that you did a great job in this department. The outro was slightly abrupt, but nevertheless you've got a great track here, keep up the good work!

REVIEW:
Not your best. Compared to some of the crap we hear on Newgrounds these days, this is still a piece of genius, but when compared to your previous tracks, this falls sadly short. Don't get me wrong, its still got the makings of a superb track, it just lacks that final touch of detail and finesse that your other tracks had. Still, the glitch effects that you're so good at didn't diminish in any way, and the sick bass was almost perfect in its use, if a bit faint in some instances. The drums are great for starters, but they got a tad repetitive as the song progressed as did the main melody, which also got a bit overpowered by the rest of the instruments in some cases. All in all, i think that the lack of variety in drums and melodies is what bugged me most about this song, because the production, the execution and the quality are all almost perfect. Overall, some faults, but good job nonetheless.

REVIEW:
Perfect is an understatement. I can't believe how well you managed to mix in the two completely different genres to produce something this great. The balance between classical and dubstep never gets overthrown, and i can say that it worked perfectly. The introduction instantly set it off with a glorious sense of expectation with that nice use of the piano. When the wobbly bass came in, i was almost thrown over at the sheer power of drum and bass blending together like that. The transitions were smooth as heck, and never blocked up the flow of the music. The effects were also well used, particularly the panning, as it served to give the music a three dimensional feel. The outro served a double cause, as it closed off the piece decently and also looped fairly well with the start. Overall, great job on all accounts. Nice work!

Phew, pretty epic round wasn't it? Also everyone, if possible recheck the results. I did them pretty late and didn't have time to check them so I could post them ASAP. If I made a mistake, we'll handle it from there.

Also, remember that I didn't bother to post brokendeck's scores, but they're in the results post. He'll be writing full reviews in the last round so you can look forward to those.

Anyway, tough luck to the people who didn't make it especially Spikrodd and aliaspharow who were really close.

Good luck to everyone!

It is inevitable, Mr. Anderson.

Anyway, I'll post my review on Savage Sea on request since I've made it a point to keep NGADM reviews away from the artist's song page unless requested.

Fuck, I lost. Ah well... It was close, like SuperSteph said...

I'm kicking myself because I could have disallowed you to compete with me when you were late, but it' was fun.

Thanks again for doing that. Yeah I understand the feeling. I owe you one though, so just keep that in mind. Hopefully if we ever compete again it will be on more "equal" terms.

I am so glad I have everyone's support in this thread. I mean, the fact that my song was judged as fairly as anyone elses may be something to keep in mind. But hey, that's me.

Thanks for the kind words xKore, it was a worthy battle :)

Alias, It was a pleasure and an honor to battle against you. Your track struck a chord in me as the style of track I made when I first joined newgrounds, albeit sounding much more professional than my 08 trance stuff. Nonetheless, You had a fantastic entry and you allowed me the opportunity to test out new waters, so thanks for being awesome!

Hehe, the thread didn't die, the few competitors that are left are all busy working on their song so they can't really post here can they?
