This is a great thread. It's about the Art Forum "Elitism". It's perfectly showcased. I really appreciate the Art Forum regs, but it's true they can be over-elitist sometimes. Other than that, you guys should really stop arguing with the website staff. It's pretty much useless as they're always going to have the last word, whether you like it or not. And being hostile is just stupid.
And Forum Drama, as always. James, you're a real drama magnet lately :)

I'm actually pretty sure people have gotten banned for using it, specifically in a demeaning way.
SO LONG AS IT SHUTS YOU FAGGOTS UP.
You'd think that a mod would know better.
Shut the fuck up you idiot.
Again whether right or wrong, and again everyone had a... reaction, This was caused by bad timing, miscomunication, and ego. Should the Regs reacted this way? No probably not. Could have the mods (as I understand it were in the dark) and the Staff could have handled this better? Absolutely. The problem was the sudden no warning shaking of our little world. Goldfish summed it up nicely. All in all, it was a nad day. But I think everyones ready to move on. Sorry to harp, but people are treating this like a blame game, when the truth is our Egos got the better of us. All of us. I'm not blaming, I'm not condoning. Just observing. I posted childishly and I apologize, but if events happend the way they did would I react the same way? Most likely. I would like to see this home become a neighborhood.
On a related note to the OP, E-bay and Amazon has some decent prices you might want to look there. I hope you find the right gift for your mom.

I totally agree.
personally, that rule's been bothering me since 2006, but i guess my four years of irritating hassle is another dude's four years of opportunities for self-gratification through obedience

That's not what it is, really. It's more along the lines of, when you post in a forum frequently and for long periods of time, the rules become a part of that forum and make more sense. I hated that rule when I first came here, but, until today, I grew to see it as what kept the forum clean.
If you take away something that feels like an integral part of a place where people frequent, the people won't feel right about it.
At 11/20/10 06:59 PM, Luxembourg wrote: I'd advise you to read through this thread again. People answered his question, and the arguing wasn't about him breaking the rules...
Yeah, I read through it. I was moreso tracking back and preaching at everyone from the first response, sorry about that.
And Fish got a solid point on the IRC thing, it eventually morphed into a SERIOUS disaster and a real embarrassment. Nobody was welcome, it was a complete mess of memes and unspoken rules and 30 moderators - each with different guidelines, some with no guidelines...then the following week would be a whole new set of trigger-happy mods, frustrated users, and an even worse environment. It had less and less to do with the community every day. Fuck that, less and less to do with REALITY AS A WHOLE. It eventually skewed so far from the original point that its final days were nothing but mod/demod cycles, ridiculous bans, and flame wars from an exclusive group of clowns that took the place over and ruined everything. Not saying that'd necessarily happen here, but the last thing NG needs is any more of that snotty, elitist bullshit when everything could just as easily be peace and family.
But yeah, either way, I think we're good here. But you want an all-encompassing, fail-safe art forum rule, here you go:
- You don't need 'rules', put the book away.
The vibe here was set a long time ago. I figure using common sense - but most importantly, understanding the context of people's posts and actions without being so hardcore is the key. This forum is practically a form of recreation, it should be stress level 0 type shit. Keep it casual, check shit out, laugh, ask something, learn something, make a friend, beast a competition, draw some tits, get a snack, jerk off, and go to bed happy. In that order. And let us know how your snack n' jerk turned out (just post that nonsense in General.) It should be more than obvious when someone fucks up or steps over the line in here...you won't need to double check anything. Being a moderator is a serious pain in the ass when you consider it's a damn near full-time job for people who already have full-time jobs and lives. Keeping shit a little more casual would take a lot of the stress and panic outta that equation - mods shouldn't have to follow the rules to the letter, or need to wipe people's asses over nonsense. I figure art mods should only be tapped if you catch some douchebag plagiarizing work, or some guy opening a thread about his favorite XBOX game...you know, shit along those lines.
I know the forum can be a pain in the ass sometimes, and could use a handful of helpful tweaks and features, and we've got em' all down. Ya'll are troopers though ;_;
And Tom doesn't need to chime in - his opinion isn't required here. He has enough shit to worry about, and I'd like to think we're fully capable of handling our own problems, as we've demonstrated. It's embarrassing for everyone involved when he has to come around to show people how to hold a fire extinguisher. The man gets this shit 200 times a day...I'd have put a stress-relieving bullet through my temple a long time ago.
Peace, my bruthas and sistas!

I like how easily things have reversed course here. The instigators are all going to bed, too tired to give a shit anymore.
I'm requesting everyone try to comprehend what actually happened here.

Yes, why would I want to go to bed at this time of night? I mean, it's only 4:43am.

You might start with things closer to home.

Yeah, because clearly I'm confused and bewildered. I'm one of the community members with his head up his ass, right? One of the people who are all anal about the rules. Because that's what this is all about. The stupid rule change.
This whole thing is ridiculous.

If you look at the "shit that hit the fan", then the majority of that is / was like 5 or 6 threads? Two of those started by moderators, the rest started because that's the example that was set for them by those moderators, including you.

I'm sorry guys. I mostly agree with you, but you can't have it both ways either. And you can't expect users to make a community promoted by rules. Tell them to behave within them. And abide when you break and then change them. Sure maybe they're over-reacting, but you're marginalizing. Both sides are being defensive. But you're the ones with ultimate responsibility. You have a higher obligation, but we have more (specific) investment.
Maybe you don't think you are being this way. But I get a very dismissive vibe from your end.
Our end immature. But what do you want? It's fucking NewGrounds. I'm drunk and might not remember this. I think this is too seriosu a tirade. I been a drinkin' since 2.

Though Newgrounds isn't a complete Anarchy. I'd say only the General is. The rest of the website is perfectly fine.
The only thing that sucks is when it stops being fun and it becomes over-zealous.
Can we please just stop all this petty bickering. Arguing so abrasively with the staff is not going to lead to positive results. Even if it did, would you rather the staff made changes to shut us up or if the staff made changes because we're respectful and valued.
Just, can we be civil? Just a little bit?
