Hello Everyone,
I hope this doesn't count as trolling, I'd really like to know what people think of using the Blender Game Engine and it's new browser plugin on this site along side Flash games?
I don't know if everyone knows about Blender so briefly: it's a free and open source 3D animation program that has a game engine attached.
Just a couple of weeks ago some great people released a new browser plugin called Burster so that Blender Game Engine games can now be embedded into web pages just like flash files.
If you click here to watch the YouTube video, I think you'll be impressed by how powerful the engine is.
I think it could really increase the number and quality of games that you could play on this site if this plugin became more widespread. Partly cos it's just very powerful and partly because it's free, so lots more people can learn and get good at making browser games.
Click here to play the demo from the video.
Click here to download the plugin itself.
I'd love to hear what people think about the demo and about burster maybe one day being a nice open source rival to flash.
Cheers! : )
Toby
ps. There are some security issues like with most plugins. You should definitely play the demo! But disable the plugin afterwards if you go on sites you don't really trust.

I've seen amazing things done with blender before so this is probably a really good idea.

Ooops! I used the wrong url for the middle link in my original post: it just takes you to the YouTube video again.
I don't seem to be able to edit my earlier post. If some friendly mod wanted to do it for me that'd be great :D
I thought I might as well upload some other screenies while I'm at it.

Yeah that's going to be tough in Flash : ) You could wait till sometime next year (maybe) for Flash 3D, then spend $3,000-$5,000 on Maya to actually make your 3D content, OR you could start using Blender for free right now.

Unity's good, but it's not open source and probably more important it's not for creating 3D content, you'll probably end up using Blender for that anyway. Seeing as that's the case, it's so much easier to just stay in the same environment when you want to make your game. No need to export. Want to change an animation? No problem just do it, then press 'P' to play your game in Blender with the updated content.
It's great to see that people are mostly quite enthusiastic. I wonder if newgrounds might accept content for this plugin? It would be so great if they'd promote the plugin, I know it would increase the market for browser games if more people could make and play games with 3D graphics... *Dreaming*

I've been using Blender for 3 years now and I still don't have decent enough skills to make a good game and put this plugin to use. Oh well :)

Or you could just use one of the many free open-source 3D engines for Flash, still use whatever 3D package of your choice, and have an audience 1,000 times larger because they don't have to install a plugin they've never heard of that has so many security nightmares that official development has been discontinued.

Fair point about the install base, but it doesn't need flash's install base before you could start making money. If just newgrounds users got Burster, that'd be plenty.
Also I don't know why you think development has been discontinued. It hasn't. It was only released 2 weeks ago and development is very much ongoing. Perhaps you're thinking of previous plugin projects.
I think the point about the new plugin is that it can handle *many* more polygons than any of the current flash 3d engines. As I understand it, they're written in javascript, which is going to be very restrictive in terms of performance. Burster's 3D code is super fast C++ accelerated by your 3D graphics card. That's why Burster can handle so much physics as well.
