Why do we pluralize Ox as Oxen, but box as boxes, not boxen, or fox as foxes, not foxen. Or why don't we say oxes?

I don't know. The English language likes to break its own rules.

Speaking of oxen, has anyone ever successfully finished "The Oregon Trail" without them?

I am probably getting trolled here, but I will go along with this.

The English language is a conglomerate of words from other languages. Those words retain some rules from the language they are taken from, such as Greek words having 'ph' instead of 'f.'

the prefix -en is very rare in common English. In fact, it's only one of three words a commoner would use. The others would be children and brethren. English is derived from many different languages and sources, and some of them may conflict with each other. Instead of completely changing the language, we just kind of go 'meh' and leave it the way it is.

Did you know that plural of "cow" is "cattle"?

A group of bulls and cows are referred to as "kine".

Betcha didn't know THAT useless crap.

Good luck forgetting it!
