Step 3) Have some completely random and totally unrelated bullshit come in and murder the character(s) in a ludicrous way.

Yes, that is pretty much how the show works. It shows wacky was that people have actually died. I guess it is entertaining when nothing else is on TV. Pretty much all shows have a set formula.
