3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsIt seems to me that people are being encouraged to vote at every turn. News Channels and Billboards are telling people to get out and vote, to exercise their rights.
Is that really a good thing?
It seems to me that a lot of people are voting just because they can. It's like a majority of the people are just going into that booth with little to no knowledge of any of the people running. Probably just picking the first person on the sheet, or picking the name they like the most. Maybe they just pick then name they've heard the most, or the guy with the coolest website.
I don't think that encouraging people to vote is the wrong thing to do. People that know what is going on and are well informed will vote on their own with out being motivated to do so.
Maybe you should even be required to take a small test on what different candidates' platforms are.
what is your opinion Newgrounds?
The voter registration pool is the same database from which the jury selection pool is drawn.
I never registered to vote, therefore I will never be called upon for jury duty.

Ha. Win.
As a minor for the next few months, I don't vote yet. But when I do, I WILL make informed choices. If you don't do that, you're only hurting your country. I'll go off topic for a second here and ask, does anybody else hate the attack ads with a burning passion?
I remember seeing an interview with a woman regarding the PM election in England.
Reporter asks: "(Discussion on who does what best and who she is interested in and backing with her vote), So who are you really going to vote for?"
Woman: "XXX Because that's what everyone else is doing".
My head sunk so, so far into my hands. But this is the mindset of pretty much all voters, and these are the people who decide our taxes and lifestyles.
Fantastic.

Everyone says that. Everyone also knows that they work. It's easier to get someone worked up against something than get someone worked up in support of something.

I laugh when I see them. Especially when one is made against one person, then right after that there is one against the person who made the other one.
Voting isn't about the candidate's opinions on issues, it's about their political party.

This, it really disgusts me.

Anybody with the ability to think critically can see right through them. Quotes out of context. Conclusions without evidence. Baseless accusations. Misleading representations of voting records. The list goes on.
I know that they work, but I can't understand why. In the age of the internet, factual information is readily and easily available. The problem is that nobody THINKS anymore. The unthinking majority decide the future of our world.

I find that ironic when that happens.
Commercial 1: Candidate A suppots unpopular stuff and wants to raise your taxes so vote Candidate B
Commercial 2: Candidate B takes millions of bucks from lobbyists and will end up working for Corporations not people of (insert locality of government here) so vote Candidate A
I can sum this thread up in 1 picture.

Why do you guys want all these tests to vote and other stuff?
Well we were dumb enough to think it was gonna happen.

To make sure people voting know what they are voting for.

Those tests would be abused like they did in the South denying blacks the right to vote.

an example question:
What is candidate ____'s opinion on healthcare?
A. ----
B. ----
C. ----
You're right. That is just trying to keep blacks from voting.

They would word it in a way that would be hard to answer.

They are really annoying as well as being all over the place. Bullshit from both sides and at the end there is a disclaimer saying the ad was payed for by the opposing party.

It is not your responsibility to make people vote responsibly. That should sum that one up.

Who would? The point is not to keep people from voting, but keep people from voting just for the heck of it. If they were actually voting because they feel passionate, and are well informed, then they will take the test and pass. The main reason for the test is to keep people who don't give a shit from voting. Just the fact there is a test is enough to keep them away.
Why do you have to be so cynical? That is what stands in the way of progress.
Though badly drawn, I think the point gets across.
I voted all pub baby. thought is is time to through out the dems they havent done shit since obama got in.

It's not the democrats fault no shit got done.
It's not gonna be the republican's fault when they get in congress and no shit gets done.
The reason nothing has gotten done is because of partisanship. The republicans and democrats are more focused on not agreeing than they are in improving the country.
Republicans suck balls.
Democrats suck balls.

Call of duty can be educational too.
I would hope that nobody votes for shits and giggles, but they do, so I'll go cry a bit.
I'm all for educating voters on their choices, but I have no idea how to do it. I'm certainly not in favor of a test before you vote, especially on candidate's stances because how would you determine if they passed or not?
"Well you know a lot about the governor's race, the senate seat race, and what Proposal 453 does. But you only got 4/8 correct about the State Supreme Court Justice so you can't vote for them. Sorry."
Lame.
I know there are websites that try to put all the candidate's opinions in one place, and perhaps something like that could be printed right at the polls. A quick look at the information THEY provide to a state or federal office that's only job is to print exactly what they put out. I don't know the exact way to do this, but its the best option I can think of for trying to educate voters while they're at the polls.

Not always, they can look at people with driver's licenses, selective service, really anything that you get from the government.

In all fairness, at least she was vaguely aware that there was an election going on around her.
Seriously, i was talking to a girl the other day who still thought Tony Blair was still PM, after a good five minutes of me ripping into her she rallied herself and came back with "Yeah, but you don't know any of the Celebrity Gossip, do you?", which instantly triggered a whole new ten minutes of me ripping into her.
I don't think she likes me anymore :D
