If you bothered to read the material I gave you, you would know that only 2% of the male population in America was gay. Also, consider that in almost all parts of the world and in nearly all points in recorded time, homosexuality was always considered immoral. I'm not trying to turn this into another morality debate, I'm just saying if gays made up any appreciable amount of the population, there would be examples of places at some point in history where homosexuality was never considered wrong.

That's what I was thinking. So even 10% is quite a lot.

That doesn't make you any more right, like at all.

No but compared to everyone else there aren't many gay people because, and I know this is surprising, the gay gene isn't really carried on that often through reproduction. It's almost like two people of the same gender can't reproduce, hmm. Dawkins summed it up well.
Truth of the matter is, that a lot of gay people just act normal, and that you would never know they are gay, because they feel it's none of your business to tell you.
Okay but why wouldn't they fall into the statistics if they are admittedly gay?

I can actually point to several.
1) Spartans
2) Greeks
3) Asians during the Edo Period
if YOU actually bothered to do some resarch into this avenue you would know this. Also note this - every single user that has argued in this thread- has been straight. I want to hear someone who is gay argue against me.
also giantdouche - it's because they're never polled - that's my ENTIRE argument here - I don't give a shti what site says that "2% of americans are gay" - I'm saying that number is made it - it's irrelevant. It's based off of faulty research, if any at all.

I don't think you have an accurate grasp of what polls are.... they aren't MEANT to question the entire population, but researchers attempt to question a large enough random sample, to get accurate results.
As for the people in the closet messing up the polls... well that's their own damn fault, I don't see why you are pissy at the research.

I'm fully aware of the sexual customs and habits of the ancient Romans and Greeks. But that still doesn't mean that half the population is gay just because it was more culturally accepted back then. In fact, even if most of the heterosexual population were comfortable in viewing or participating in homosexual behaviors it wouldn't necessarily imply that they're gay.

It comes from the CDC, 2% is the accepted number. If you want to argue against mainstream science go right ahead, but I won't waste my time on your uneducated ass.
I don't think you have an accurate grasp of what polls are.... they aren't MEANT to question the entire population, but researchers attempt to question a large enough random sample, to get accurate results.
And that large population, if sufficiently large, is often an accurate portrayal of the whole. Also, read the rest of my comment.

Oh really? Let's see... it was written by a doctor and references data collected by the CDC... But hey, any source that disagrees with your preconcieved conclusions must be a bad source right? Grow up.

you don't get it - it all depends on WHERE the poll was conducted. It's like saying 1% of the population in the states is black, and doing the poll in a majority white population.
And I understand that polls aren't meant to judge a region as a whole, but people still love to throw that numbner in your face, as if it's fact.
Still, this thread seems to be generating a lot of hate - not my intent - I was just ranting over what I felt was a ridiculous number.
For example: take anyone ages 1- 15: they aren't gonig to tell you they're gay - most of them don't even know yet! Then there are thsoe who will not because they fear condemnation for religious purposes. Then there are thsoe who CLAIM to be straight as a result of ex-gay ministries.
then there are those who are desperately trying to deny themselves that they are gay and try to be straight because they fear persecution from their peers. Then there are thsoe who fear that their information which is given to these polls will be leaked out - that someone might find out - and they will be persecuted.
then there are the older crowd - who are either married or raied to NEVER EXPRESS THEIR FEELINGS - TO BURY THEM DEEP ENOUGH INSIDE SO THAT THEY WILL GO AWAY. There arequite a lot of these actually - they normally have kids and live perfectly normal lives. Aaaand then there are the others, and the oens that don't want to be polled.
so that's a lot of people that won't say "yes" in a poll.

I see your argument and your right, they shouldn't poll sexuality to create some bullshit numbers to put on some pretty graphs and charts, it's a sensitive subject and some people are just in denial or afraid to say "Yes I'm gay." Though I do believe you are really over exagerating (how the fuck do you spell that?) with the whole "I think 50% of the population is gay" or whatver you said. I'm sorry you are in the minority the vast majority of people are straight.

so that's a lot of people that won't say "yes" in a poll.
To be fair, the polls do cover the entire US. Its called the US census.
But I see your point. People won't put down on a poll that they're gay because they're afraid to. This makes sense.
What I don't think makes sense is that from this corollary that some people are in denial about their sexuality, you have grounds to claim that 50% of the population is gay. I agree with you when you say that there are probably more gays than accounted for in polls, because polls don't include closet gays. But saying that many people are gay is just too extraordinary to belive.
If you had listened to my arguements above (which i'm sure you did), you will know that I've pointed out that most people are naturally straight. I don't know if you made a choice to be gay or you belive that it was because of they way your were born, but the fact is society would fall apart if most people were gay. Population would drastically decrease. It is impossible that that many people are gay.
(BTW, I enjoy this intelligent conversation we're having.)

tbh - I am rather enjoying it too - I love to debate :)
you are right - 50% is probably too high of a number - even if we iinstead of saying that 50% of people are gay - say 505 of people AREN'T straight. Liek I said when I was ahid they always said 1 in 4 people. I'm willing to accept any number between 10% and 25% for non-straight individuals.
Personally however, for such a sensitive number - I think every single person in a country should be polled- but as I demonstrated above, even this would not produce accurate results.
As for choice - I can't choose what makes me hard- just like you can't ;)

He is indeed a doctor!
A self professed small town Catholic foot doctor. He is also VERY clearly anti-homosexuality, as is made clear by the very website that you posted.
While the CDC may have found this information (in '94), this very one sided website isn't the best place to get your information.

I don't know the actual percentage of gay people, but I doubt it is as high as 50% like you think it is. That number seems insanely high. Gays are very much in a small minority, even including ones that are in the closet.

yeah let's settle on 10-25% - I think we can agree that's a more accurate number.

I don't believe that 10% of people in America are gay.
I beleve that the figure is true if you account for the fact alot of you ignorant Americans will cause alot the gays there to ignore the voices in their head, and go have a happy family with kids and shit.
...
But as far as 50%... thats just a little high don't you think...?
About the American ignorance thing... I'm not a spaz who believes that your all rednecks who go around killing gays and black people and fuck your sisters, but I reckon that all the openly gay people in your schools/workplaces get verbally abused and bullied, meaning all the unsure people would keep their mouths shut through fear of social exclusion.

LOL, or just move to the UK, unless your in an extreme part of the country (Heavily Religious for example) then it's OK to be gay... I'm West of Brighton by about 20miles away from Brighton and I know about 15 non straight people, two celebrating their twleve month anniversary and another gay couple who are engagged.
We also have this thing called gay pride, where gays are supported for their courage... It's an excuse to drink if your not gay lol

Since march gays can get married in churches and such, however it's the churches decision whether to do it or not, so religion can still discriminate.

nope- buti it did spawn 3 pages of discussion :P
remember - controversy spawns the most discussion of all.
