I'd think water based lube could cause rust, not sure about oil based lube.

I have literally no idea what you are doing, But I am very excited about your science experiment. Please keep me informed of your science.

I think lube would cause rust, If it is water based, then the oxygen molecules would cause oxidation, so if you want to lube it up, don't buy a bear trap that contains iron.
