yeah it's a known issue that the stero shaper in fl 9 has compatibility issues, and you'll get an error that will pop up - and then everything will go to hell.
As a result I avoid it like the plague now.
and yeah you're all correct - I can hear it all the tiem when I listen to it now- I still feel my ears are pretty much better than most - I just have to make the necessary balance adjustments and I'm good - I think my problem with that song was I worked on it too long and thus my ears adjusted - I remember B0UNC3 used to get the same criticism - that his songs were getting too bright - the battle for ultimate clarity sometimes takes us too far - I should go back and fix it one of these days..
but don't worry - I can still critique the rest of your songs - I aint deaf yet! ;)

That's odd. I've used stereoshaper a good deal and never had that particular problem. I have it with sh*t-tons of external plugin though and it is a bitch when it goes down.

Yeah I noticed that my FL decided to give my sytrus plugin an access violation every now and then whenever I used the stock stereo shaper...
But I just close it down and reopen FL and it'd usually fine.

This may sound counter-intuitive but unless you're a sound engineer, mastering is really all about the mixing. Compress, equalize, stereoize, and do whatever you've gotta do to make your instruments fit well together in the full mix of the song. Make sure shit don't get muddled, most of it's common sense, cut out some of the lower kick drum frequencies when you have lower bass sounds going, and sidechain sub basses with the kick.
This.
Read books by working (and highly regarded) mastering engineers such as Bob Katz and you'll see that some of the best songs they've worked with are the ones where they never really had to do much in the first place. If you spend the time to do things right at the mix stage, the mastering stage should only require very very fine adjustments with a minimum amount of plug ins. I imagine, in these albumless ipod centric days, the only real reason real mastering engineers still get work is because of the "fix it in the mix" mentality that a lot of studios have, or even worse, the fix it in the master mentality, both of which result in messy tracks necessitating the need for highly trained fellows with sharp ears.
I think a lot of people think that the mastering stage is where you can make even a shitty sounding mix sound pro. There is no magic audio pixie dust that will fix a sloppy mixdown. It's a very simple system when working with tracking sound. Good sound in = good sound out. Get it right the first time and you'll be amazed at how little you need to do once you reach the mastering stage.
That's my two cents and personal experience on the matter!

I have no recollection of this at all to be perfectly honest. Which song(s) was that?
