Moving From Garageband To Reason :d 2010-10-10 06:51:29 Reply

Oh goody good gum drops. Im moving from Garageband to Reason. I have been able to produce some pretty cool things with Garageband, but its the most limited piece of shit program out there. No offense Garageband, your more of a great recording tool than anything. *NO PRE SET LOOPS DAMMIT*

I do not have a midi right now, as I am still researching on what would be best for me, but I do have a Mac and I do have limited knowledge on how to use Reason. I guess I will just have to crank out the manual and read it piece by piece until I understand at least %60 of the program. I love creating ambient like tunes, so this should be a blast.

Any pro tips on what Reason has to offer? DEMO DOWNLOAD. OPENING PROGRAM.

holy shit thats a lot of buttons

Until you get a keyboard you can (with Reason 5) press fn+f4 to get a limited midi keyboard from your computer keys

Really, just open a new blank file, put a 14:2 mixer in it if it isn't there already, whip out a Thor or a Combinator, play with some presets and learn how the sequencer works... try adding an effect here and there and see how it feels... and then the Subtractor synth is a basic synth that's useful when you want to learn about signal flow and the most important synth parameters, after that you can start a long and awesome journey with the manual as your know-it-all sidekick

Yeah i just figured out how to get all these built in synthesizers. I just went to window -> whatever and I figured out where the keyboard input midi window was. Right now im trying to figure out why I cant hear my instruments I play. My sound output is set to built in output so I dont know what the problem is.

Haven't decided on a MIDI keyboard yet? Have you considered a Roland (Edirol) PCR-800?

Ive considered many things. I went down to the local guitar center and was like HOLY TITS THERE ARE A LOT OF KEYBOARDS IN HERE. I tried a few and wasted 2 hours playing them. I might get one that I really like at that store since they are relatively cheap.

P.S. I figured out the sound problem in reason and am already learning how to create nice pads! :)

Heh, that's a common problem with Guitar Centers' keyboard section. You walk in and see a giant cave of metal and flashing lights and music, and spend hours playing with everything without thinking about buyability. I've done this many, many times.

If you want cheap, I know RadioShack has a few little keyboards, some under $80. Maybe one of them will have MIDI ports?

reason is lejit.

my one tip for starting a new program, go download and watch a bunch of reasoner beginer dvds, where someone demonstrates how to do various things.

reason is unique in how it actually emulates an analog rack of equipment, which makes producing seem very fun compared to the drop down lust type thing in other programs

Quarl started out on GB and moved on to Reason as well. You should give him a shout, he might have some tips.

I produced a few songs for reason, i didnt have a midi either. It's a good program. You should know it can only be the slave for rewire.

Quarl wants to put carnivorous earwigs inside inside my head and tear my face off with a needle. I'm sure he can set all that aside and help me out though! :D

woah, completly missed this thread. if it's true that you own reason i can help you out dood. i really don't hate you at all. i just have trouble believing that you continue to deny the fact that your song run with me is actually just the garage band sample song catwalk with a few of the radio stager samples thrown on top. No one cares man. Just remove that song or a mod eventually will free of charge. I've really just been too lazy to report it in the clean up thread all these years.

Anyway, every since 2009 hit I have actually been learning some awesome techniques for creating songs, even in Garageband. I am pretty sure that I am the only user that even uses Garageband on here without plugging in pre-set loops. VSTs and plugins are awesome tools for creating music. I don't even have a MIDI other than my AASEDRFTGHUJIKOL;' keys on my mac keyboard. I have really gotten use to this minimilistic and simple setup to such an extent that I actually prefer it... although yesterday at guitar ceter i spent like 3 fucking hours messing around with the MIDI keyboards. Holy shit guys, those things can pull off some crazy stunts. On my next pay check I might just buy one and continue experimenting.

Quarl, you and I need to have outselfs a nice little audio chit chat. I have been meaning to talk to you for the longest time now because I really do recognize your audio capabilities. I notice that your more of dubsteper / industrialist. I am attempting to bring in a drone / ambient movement onto the portal currently, but need some professional help to make my ideas come to life. I can not use Reason because my trial expired, and i hate pirating things... so what im looking for right now are some nice VST and plugins that I can use on my Mac. Most of these I can simply mess with in Garageband, basically extending Garagebands capabilities to a bit more than expected. I currently am going outside and recording real life sound effects and messing with them using garageband. I am going to try and create a soothing, 3D oriented ambient track for my next attempt.

So yeah, I'll shoot you a PM Quarl. I would love to hear some opinions from yah and perhaps we can look back before mid 2008 and have a nice, posh laugh at the ridiculous music I use to create as an immature and arrogant 16 year old.

Garage Band is so limited.
With Reason I have gotten into the habit of drawing my midi into the editor.
Once you get used to it, the ideas can fly out faster than real time recording of the notes.

I just zoom in and draw it out.

lol... True it's the exact same thing. Just because you added some radio samples in nearly random places doesn't make it a unique song of your own.
