Sounds like you haven't loaded the device drivers for the LAN port.
After you reformatted the system, you need to then install hardware-specific for your machine, such as LAN, video, USB, etc. If your PC has a "device driver" CD, that would be ideal, and that's what you should run next.
To verify that you are missing any drivers, go into Device Manager (in Control Panel, under System ). You should see a list / device tree, broken into sections like Video, Hard Drive, Network, etc.
If you see any yellow "!" or red "X" marks, you're missing device drivers. Your best bet is to go to the unit's manufacturers website (Dell, Acer, HP, etc), look up your model number, and find all of the device drivers for the O/S you just reloaded. You most likely will need to use someone elses's PC to find the drivers and load them to a USB stick, and then install them into your machine.
So, what brand and model unit do you have (like: Dell Inspiron 9400 or HP Pavilion Z3240)? And what version operating system did you just reload? Let me know, and maybe I can help you over the rough spots...
It's funny to see this here, just yesterday I formatted my entire harddrive, and had some difficulties seeking out some of the drivers for the machine. I ended up trying out wireless drivers for a completely different series of laptop laptop, one with a completely different wireless adapter ended up being the one that got it working. :3

Yeah, lol, that's funny. It makes you realize just how many drivers, plug-ins, and programs you really use when you have to re-download all of them XD
When I first tried to get my internet connection back, windows informed me that I needed to
connect to the internet to get my wireless card driver -.-
Irony much? XD Ended up having to use a usb wireless card to get the driver, lol.

And there's always one you'll miss, or have to fish around for hours to find on some obscure site.

Perfect example of Microsoft trying to be helpful. Yeah, like a tornado in a trailer park.

Which, also ironically, you loaded THAT USB device driver to activate the USB wireless circuit so you could connect to the internet to find the original wireless driver....
Everything else okay? Was it just the wireless driver, or do you still need Video, MoBo or audio?
