You don't even want to know
The jam and the clash are the only punk bands i really ever got into, mainly because I disregard punk as a genre because of how caught up it got with social scenes rather than music.
but i wouldn't really group the jam and the clash together with all the other punk bands of the time, they had more refinement and better sensibilities, or something like that. not sure what to call it really.
"Is this not a reasonable place to park?"
'Punk' can be used to describe a lot of different bands even if they wouldn't necessarily constitute as such..like how post-hardcore bands retain certain elements of punk music while disregarding others.
Not a huge listener, but some of my favorites would be:
The Sex Pistols
At the Drive-In
The Blood Brothers
Frodus
Pixies
Joy Division
Thursday
Nirvana
Some others to mention would be Fugazi and Black Flag.
Most of the above mentioned bands aren't punk bands, but rather extensions of punk music.
Choking Victim/Leftover Crack
Cock Sparrer
Aus Rotten
Propagandhi
Operation Ivy
Oi Polloi
DOA
Dayglo Abortions
I could go on for hours.
Black Flag
Fugazi
Refused
Minor Threat
Trust me, I'm Aussie.
CAREFREE WHEREVER I MAY BE
Some classic punk would be the buzzcocks and the sex pistols.

Read the thread - they were mentioned.
Also there are some good suggestions in this thread, but I'm going to add Gogol Bordello - not your typical punk band but they're definitely worth a listen as they're quite entertaining. They're probably not to everybody's liking, i dunno 1248uadfhfu

Sex Pistols and Ramones, quite obviously.
But the Exploited and the Dead Kennedys are a couple other punk bands that are often overlooked, so you might want to check them out as well.
