Neutral Milk Hotel.
They have a wide genre of songs.
If you're into low-fi, listen to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.
If you're more into upbeat music, try Song Against Sex or Holland 1945.
Just go through their music on YouTube.

You also have to realize he explicitly said no screamo, metal, or any genre ending in core. Which are my favorite genres. That music tends to be what i enjoy the most. My favorite bands right now - Underoath and blessthefall are both screamo, Killswitch Engage and Asking Alexandria are metalcore, Chelsea Grin and Suicide Silence are deathcore. Not OP's style. So I tried to be helpful and post a list of alternative rock bands. Most of the ones I listed I only know a few songs by, as it's not my style. I can't help it if it was a fail list, it's not my main genre so I don't really know if it's good.

Trivium is totally metalcore.
If you're interested in something new possibly, check out protest the hero. They may be metal, but they're unique.
