Madness = Rip Off?

So whenever I go and show someone at school anything that's Madness they say something along the lines of..

"What the heck? Is this like a rip off of thing thing?"

I never even heard of Thing Thing...what is it? and is Madness really a rip off of it?

Hmm, I do wonder if madness is based on xiaoxiao. Essentially, both games are about fighting characters with lots of kills and gore, one based on sticks, other on the second most easily drawn generic character.
