On the way home from the store, of course. Fallout 3's was the most entertaining.
Before you even think about loading up the game. I believe you should read the Instruction Booklet cover to cover.
Also write down things in the Notes section of the booklet if it has one.
Instruction Booklets used to be big, and colorful.
Now they often are black and white, and only about 8 or so pages covering the controls. I don't usually bother with them anymore.
Ah, but the old ones, were cool. I'd always read them cover to cover.
I still read them, some are really well done, while some just explain the controls.
shit's amazing
I liked it when instruction booklets had more content to them. Now it's all really worthless information they contain. Bethesda's games, especially Oblivion, still come with booklets that are useful.
The best booklet I've had with a game though was Guild Wars. That thing is pretty huge and it covers a lot of content in depth.

ubisoft is already phasing them out, many other companies are following suit as well. I actually enjoyed reading them when I had nothing else to do.

Bethesda's games are too massive not to read the books though. I suppose those would be the only exception for me. That and any other massive role playing game like it.
The others have tutorials now.
I do skim through them on the way home though. Actually, I was on a bus on my way home skimming through Arkham Asylum's booklet when I made this thread. It's why I asked.

Nintendo's booklets are still fairly large.

I like having something to read in the bathroom
I used to read myself to sleep with them, back when I played the Genesis. Nowadays, all you need is the in-game tutorials...
When all else fails, blame the casuals!
I do. Good reading material on the way home.
.
For some reason, I always tend to hold on to them, especially the old ones from the SNES/Genesis/PS1 days which seem to have snipets of levels, weapons, and other cool stuff. Even with stuff like Gamefaqs and in-game tutorials, nothing beats a thumping good read of an instrucional booklet, IMO.
Although, I would like it if they got rid of the Notes section, because who honestly would use that?
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
I read them. In-game tutorials can kiss my ass, I still like reading the manual. For good games, it gives you an idea of a few things before you jump in: it doesn't contain the whole plot, not for modern games, but it gives you a brief scenario that the game fleshes out, plus the basic controls, maybe a few characters, stuff like that. And I still like to see that, because it means someone actually put effort into that stuff, which goes a long way to making a good, engaging game.
I always read the instruction booklets, but usually not to find out how the game works. I'm more interested in the art work, additional background story and character backgrounds you can usually find in them.
Like you said, there are often plenty of tutorials in the game already, so you don't really need the instruction booklet to figure out how to play.

Why would I bother anymore when every game released is just a copy of another?

The original one for Rollercoaster Tycoon was pretty damn spiffy if i recall. Back when PC games came in huge ass boxes for no real reason.

That was a load of ass.
How the fuck are you supposed to fit them on your shelves?

Some games require you to read the enclosed instruction book.

I like the Rockstar ones. GT4 had a 212 page one.
