Suggestions for pumpkin design 2010 2010-09-15 12:10:01 Reply

Hey Guys!

So every year I do (or try to do) a really scary pumpkin, and a newgrounds-themed pumpkin that I enter into then gs competition.

Last year I did tar-boy, the year before that I did one based off a ngs cat, and the year before that I did khale from the story of khale.

And of course ReNaeNae always beats me no matter how hard I try ;)

so, what should I do this year?

For a scary pumpkin I am thinking of doing one with a shark teeth motif - so layers and layers of teeth - I like to challenge myself in the carving dept - while still making it look cool and detailed and scary.. as for the newgrounds themed one I like to do something that's really detailed.

here are my pumpkins from recent years - you can see the full versions by going to my art section on ngs.

Well, if you're gonna do shark teeth, don't forget to bleed all over the teeth again =P
As for Newgrounds themed, howabout Leo and Satan?

I think i've run out of big-ass moles to cut off my body.. >_>..

as for leo and satan,, I dunno - would that be considered popular enough? It only ever seems like the most popular "staff related" flashes get chosen - like pumpkins made off of flash characters that staff members have made..

What about a Tankmen one? Or is that a little bit too generic?

You could do a NG logo pumpkin

You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else.

That tarboy pumpkin is amazing! I love the shading on it.
Maybe do a group shot of like all the main NG characters.

thanks - it was so hard to do i had to actually carve it with nail scissors. as the pumpkin was rather small..

I think I need something more.. detailed.. like renaenae did xombie that one year and won, even though she never fully finished it.. and last year she did those 2 characters.. Id prefer to make something that can actually win - as I am confident inough in my carving skills that I can attempt anything..

Is professional pumpkin carving something you'd like to pursue?
Cause you're good enough you could probably get companies to hire you around halloween time to make pumpkins for them.

there is one problem with that - pumpkins don't last mre than a couple days after carving - the ends start to curl - and they theyn look awful - pumpkins look best only on the day they are carved. So it's not really a very lucrative career - and I find carving wood to not be as .. enjoyable as the medium is a lot stiffer and thus I don't have as much control.. that and when you actually buy blocks of wood there is the concern that your'e going to fuck it up..

True. Maybe you could take cool photography with it or something.. You have points about the life of a pumpkin. Hmmm.. Make the pumpkin strawberry clock but carve it so the entire pumpkin looks like a giant orange strawberry!!!

Of course it would!! I think it's a brilliant idea too! I was going to suggest it myself! :P
If done properly, it's a guaranteed win!

Also, I will not be doing one this year (for real and serious!)

Tarboy isn't staff-made...
The tarboy one was honestly my favorite one of last year. I was surprised it didn't win anything.
It doesn't have to be staff-made, just a popular flash on newgrounds. Leo and Satan would most likely qualify.

Hmmmmm.... maybe something Brackenwood related, Leaping Bitey like on the shirt in the store or the Yuyu. How about Meatboy or something about The Sagittarian? Dunno if that has been done before though.

I always think about the Reincarnation series when it comes to Halloween. But I can't imagine, that this hasn't been done by someone yet.

Actually, the Very Generic Skull I carved last year ended up lasting almost a month before rotting. Or so I was told. After carving I put vaseline over it it I left it in the back fridge for about 3 days, before giving it to my uncle. So this year I have been looking in to preservation methods.

So Yeah, I think I'll be looking through this thread for some Ideas of my own now :3

Damn I love Halloween

yeah Vaseline definitely prevents it from drying out - unless of course that's the look you are going for.

my pumpkins generally take at least 6 hours to carve.. sadly I risk the first pumpkins drying out too much if I do that.. that and I specialize in individual faces :)
