Considering that all meaning is purely applied and never inherent, although it IS a coupling of sorts of mind and universe, one might be better inclined to ask:

"What is the meaning of meaning?"

And I think the answer to that question is:

"The meaning of meaning is to apply meaning."

"What is the meaning of life?" "Whatever it means to you."

There isn't one?

I think thats the problem with this question is people aren't willing to settle for a simple "There is no meaning to life".

Maybe what is is just that, is?

The problem with asking a human being that question is that by design we correlate and associate everything we see, thus meaning (a mental connection, usually cause-effect, between two or more objects or ideas).

So although yes, there is no ultimate meaning in the sense of inherent within everything, we must nonetheless apply meaning in order to experience anything beyond pure sensation, which is useless for the survival or proliferation of anything, and certainly not condusive to asking questions like "What does this mean?"

Also, because we DO apply meaning, it could be argued that there IS meaning. I think therefore I am, sort of. However, that does not at all mean that meaning is, once again, inherent in anything other than the function of the human mind and brain.
