So you can put the discs inside the cartridge or something. Plus make the cartridges a little more smaller.
Either way, discs are cooler, and if you break it by taking it out of the box and playing flippy with it then thats your own damn fault.

One day, discs and cartridges will both be ancient history. Everything will be purely downloaded.

I loved cartridges and I agree with you, but the industry (like all industries) is based around money. Cartridges are much more expensive, CD's are so much cheaper that companies don't want to pay any extra money because they're all greedy and only want to make money. Also, someone else brought up another good point, cartridges can hold nothing compared to CD's. All games that are masterpieces on the SNES like Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VI, etc., all those games were flirting with the limits on the amount of "stuff" you could put into a cartridge. Moving onto the N64 generation, again they were flirting with limits of "stuff" you can put into a cartridge. Games like Majora's Mask needed a friggen expansion pack to enhance the graphics. So, before I continue to ramble on, the bottom line is, CD's: cheaper, and can hold much more "stuff"; Cartridges: More reliable and run faster/better (no load times!). I don't see anyone going back to cartridges, not only is the money a huge thing with companies, but having to put less "stuff" in a game, companies are going to feel too restricted.

People seem to be in the mindset that a cartridge HAS to be huge and expensive. Think about SD chips and shit, those are a form of cartridge and SURELY thats cheaper to produce than a UMD Disk.

But the fact is that we can all combine disks and cartridges to make a retarded baby thing and the games will run faster and th games will hold more memory. Making The.Heavely.Retarded.Edgy.Baby
Or th THREB :D

Ah the good old days.
Flips switch. Game doesn't turn on. Takes out cartridge, blows in opening. Inserts cartridge, flips switch. Nothing happens. Flips switch again and again until it turns on.
The average person has only one testicle.

Christ, you people are slow.
I don't LITERALLY mean to bring back the old cartridges, I mean a modern version of them.
Think more along the lines of a USB memory stick(you never have to blow on those, do you?).
At 9/5/10 12:18 PM, TheCupcakeArmy wrote: I suppose if they were like PSP discs, then sure.
Thats not what I mean.
The PSP would be cheaper than the DS but the disc drive jacks up the price and the DS is much smaller and sturdier as a result.

If by ''virtually indestructable'' you thought I meant ''could survive multiple blows from a sledgehammer'' then you sir, are a massive vagina.
Disks can bend -_-
By that logic, Paper is stronger than concrete because paper can bend.
This means that if one where to produce a cartridge based console with output comparable to a 7th gen disk reading console, each individual game would not only cost more to buy, but have a crippled life span before the cartridge wiped itself of it's internal memory banks.
Cost would be a problem, but like a mentioned before, a flash usb type of thing would be used instead of traditional carts. They don't tend to break down(no moving parts) and I've seen those things available in up to 120GB.
According to this, FF13 is 37.6 gigs. The discs for PS2 games were only 4.7 gigs.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS2 Now, the 3DS cartridges are up to 2 gigs, so assuming that the jump from 6th to 7th gen cartridges is equivalent to the PS2 to PS3 jump, it would take 3 7th gen cartridges to hold that data.
Okay, that makes no sense whatsoever. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that it would take 8 PS2/Xbox discs, or 15 GameCube discs(lol) to hold that much data, you're pulling statistics out of your ass.

Okay, let's take MGS4 as the example today. It's 50 gigs, a completely filled dual layered Blu-ray disc (look it up yourselves; I'm right).
Now, because flash drive as the cheapest and most common of the "modern cartridge" family, we'll use that. A 64 gig flash drive (the smallest one to contain a MGS4), can run anywere from $125 to $300 at retail. Assuming that the cheapest ones can be made for $50, that's still a significant amount of money for a single game.
In comparison, I can buy 20 Blu-ray discs for $60, or $30 on sale.
It's just too expensive to run on any other format, besides digital download, which won't become the standard until everyone has lightening-fast internet connections. (You'd be surprised at how many people are still on dial-up or don't have the internet at all).

Yeah, but there's more sales of the DS than the PSP, now is there?

Actually they are more like SD cards designed to store DS games instead of photos and that kind of things and they use flash memory for saved data and the same thing most likely applies to 3DS as well.
My answer is no to put it simply.

Is a very weak point.
Purchasing a license to play a game/have its information stored on a device you own is different than purchasing an actual tangible game.
Downloaded games/movies have 0 resale value.
Downloaded games/movies cannot be lent to a friend.
Downloaded games/movies cannot be rented at a video store.
If everything goes electronic the consumer gets totally fucked.
Also, OP, cartridges were far too easily emulatable, and this supported many companies reasons for changing over.
Someone was also making an argument about more data on a CD.... but if you look at nintendo...
They obviously didn't care about how much data went on a CD, since their conversion from cartridge to CD (from N64 to GC) involved smaller than normal disks.
Many games would then be released with more than one CD (dumb.... but true)

Actually i think that a brand new evolution on storage data might be the solution.
Common if the scientist can think of this, they could figure out how to make an storage device as durable as cartidges and as powerful as disc
