Yeah, this year's April Fools gag was a lot more obvious than usual, but I wanted to keep things very tongue-in-cheek to avoid any actual confusion (aka legal issues).
Some of you picked up on the inspiration for this joke - some time ago, McDonalds actually did buy a "total sponsorship" package with a website - IGN.com. They actually rebranded their entire site to reflect the golden arches, with pictures of McGriddles floating around in every corner. It was the most horrifying thing you could ever witness - imagine watching an episode of Seinfeld where all the characters dress in McDonalds uniforms, spend all their time in a McDonalds, and eat nothing but McDonalds. That's basically the equivalent.
It would be cool to have a sole sponsor for the site, but that just isn't the way to do it. The user backlash on IGN caused them to revert back to their original format. I'll attach a screenshot to this post, so you can see just how truly horrifying it was. :)
