I am unclear if this would be legal

Hey, I'm new here... just saying. Anyway I wanted to do a cover version of a song by BFMV and I also wanted to add a verse. But it says like all over that all content uploaded had to be your work. Maybe I misread part or skipped something but I can't tell if it counts as my work if I play the music and do the vocals or if it's still not okay since someone else wrote the majority of the words. So I figured I'd ask before I proceeded... though it'll take me a flipping year with my schedule anyway but thanks for anyone who could clear that up for me. I'm not too good with legalities.

I uploaded a Stairway to Heaven Cover. As long as its a cover and not the ACTUAL song that you're trying to pass off as your own, I think you're in the clear.
That's for people who like steal music then say its their own.
I had a 13 year old kid on here tell me that he wrote the lyrics to all of the Guns n' Roses song. I. Shit. You. Not.

Haha, wow... that was a tad bone headed. Thank you for clearing that up then! Maybe sometime next year I'll actually have put something on this site and my homepage will stop telling me I still haven't contributed anything. :)

For the most part you're in the clear - rearranging something that's licensed and releasing it onto Newgrounds is considered a fan-based work, according to standard copyright law, so Newgrounds has nothing to worry about if some uppity producer wanted to sue Newgrounds.
It is unacceptable, however, to post the unaltered work of someone else and masquerade as the original artist (like this guy tends to do - seriously, I can find the real artist to nearly every single Audio post he's ever made, if you want me to... ). The original artists take offense whenever their work is passed off as someone elses, and it does nothing to help their own credibility.
Don't worry about your stuff too much unless it's unaltered. To be safe (and respectful) you can include where you obtained the material in your track - most artists appreciate it when you do that.
Need some music for a flash or game? Check it out. If none of this works send me a PM, I'm taking requests.

And...
If you're not 100% confident if you will pass approval or be banned, you can always send an audio moderator a PM with a link to your track and ask them it that will go through. That can possibly save you a permanent audio ban.
Since they're pretty busy with approval don't expect a fast answer...
Just don't to the following:
- Use samples from copyrighted songs
- Use premade loops from the program to make your own music (you can use 1 or 2 but that's it)
- Mess with the program and produce some garbage (ie SPAM)
- A loop made from a copyrighted tracks
...and you should be good to go. In your case, the 3rd and 4th guidelines should be redundant. But the 1st or 2nd guidelines could kill you, so make sure to not break them.
I help users, catch stolen flashes and flag reviews from assholes. Sue me for serving justice to Newgrounds.
