You'll be surprised to find many youtube videos on how to become popular. Most of the time, you have to present yourself in a manner that would make others angry enough to leave comments, eventually sparking a flame war and ultimately leading your video to be posted on blogs all over. Though I'm going to assume you don't want to make yourself look like a jackass in front of millions just for the lulz. Best thing you could do is think of something people want to see that youtube doesn't have yet. It's fairly easy if you're entrenched in a hobby that may interest others in wanting to learn it. I for example occasionally give out piano tutorials for popular video games, which attracts a large enough crowd to make me feel pleased.

massive amount of views...
if you want that then simply refresh and refresh and refresh ... and do that with like ... i think that one guy here on NG was refreshing a NG page with 42 tabs open, getting like 500 hits every few seconds...
though i am not sure if youtube has a smart view system where this will not work, but you can try this one pretty easy...
make a bot out of it and leave it on for a day...
bet you 5 cents that if you can refresh and the views go up you will make it to the number 1 watched movie on youtube

It really depends on what type of crowd you're attracting. One of my tuts has views in 6 figures, which is a substantial number for me in that I'd never imagine that many people would want to learn a song from a game I'd imagine only a small crowd in America actually plays. Though I also have a playlist of videos which are just songs ripped from a nearly dead online game I used to play, each of which only have a couple hundred views. Even though both cases provide different numbers, I still find them both to be quite successful because I anticipated beforehand what kind of people I wanted to see in my comments. I would absolutely loathe having one of my videos go up to 50,000,000 views, only because I know most of those views and comments would be from people I don't really like to associate myself with. But that's only because I'm not that beauty queen giving makeup tips, that guy vlogging about what's popular this week, or that guy obsessing over rainbows.

Every video stays around 300 for a little bit before the views update. It happens to everyone.
