Human Evolution 2010-08-18 14:48:30 Reply

While watching the National Geographic channel about the evolution of a wolf-like land mammal into a whale, I started thinking about human evolution. We have our roots in monkeys, over time we began to walk upright, utilize the things around us to make tools for hunting and gathering, master fire, and eventually become what we are.

We are industrious, social, and intelligent beings that are a result of millions of years of selective breeding. Just imagine what we'll turn into in the next million years.

The average person is well built, he can scale trees and mountains, swim, lift and move relatively heavy objects, has good eyesight and hearing, but most importantly is intelligent. We as a species have limitless potential, and eventually we'll be replaced by something greater than ourselves. Dinosaurs usually evolved into something bigger, stronger, and faster than what they were, but they also lost things that they didn't use, like a T-rex's hands for example who was 13 meters long and had two fingers, compare that to the Guanlong, T-rex's earliest known predecessor which is only 3 meters long with three fingers.

The question I have is what is the next step in human evolution?

I really cannot grasp the true form of the Human's next stage of evolution.

I'm guessing we'll have dicks for thumbs though.

We didn't evolve from monkeys. We shared a common ancestor.

Evolution is strongly driven by environment, and since humans have more or less removed themselves from the environment, its hard to say what exactly will happen next. Also, the way you describe evolution as discrete steps isn't what really happens. It is a VERY slow process that takes many generations to see even the slightest difference.

My one prediction is that within the next couple hundred years, every person on the planet will require glasses. As we as humans have removed the need for good eye sight with the invention of glasses, and therefore bad eyesight is no longer selected against.

I believe that our evolution will not be natural, but through the use of genetic modification, today we know it is possible but we lack the skill and understanding of this type of "transformation" however that doesn't mean that in the next few years we won't see no results.....on a random note some weirdo will most likely genetically alter girls with cat ears soon.

Super-humans.

The people living in the mountains will become really powerful, big, strong and agile, and they'll be able to climb very fast and efficient, herd sheep and fight bears, in order to make the most of mountain-living.

The urban landscape will be filled of super-intelligent humans, which will have lost some or all or their muscles, the only important thing being the brain. They will use technology to aid transport, having very weak legs and muscles.

Yeah, I guess.

Thanks for the thread.

As well as our evolution, When I was younger I wondered about our technology evolving too.Like computers becoming portable like laptops, and mobile phones, from keypads to touch screens.

For the most part, human evolution has come to a stand still. The only thing evolving is our brains, which for the most part is evolving extremely fast. In the next couple thousand years, I predict we will have become so inteligant that we will create sub races of humans, or use machines to make us so smart that we no longer have a need for common things like hands or legs. We will be evolving other animals so we will have company in the vast universe. Of course, we will probably be able to bend time, or matter, to get from place to place. We will have colonized hundreds of planets, were each race of humans will evolve diffrently due to the nature of the planet their living on.

Just kidding. I think the next step in human evolution is cybernetics. We've reached the pinnacle as far as body design goes, the next step will be augmenting our intelligence and strength via robotics and nano-technology.

We've already made exoskeletons, the next obvious step would be endoskeletons (robotically assisting muscle movement from the inside of your body).

Mmm..yes and no..

YES i think people will start replacing body parts with robotics and stuff, but its an EASY no when you say that we've reached the pinnacle as far as body design goes.

Were just going to keep evolving, keep changing, you can't say we're done evolving, were never done until were extinct. We'll keep changing (like how the mayans were all like 3-4 feet tall, we greww)

Also, nobody will be birthed with robotic parts, but there might be some kind of new religion where you replace a limb or something with nanobots haha

Well, since we have no natural predators to thin the herd anymore, gormless genes will be passed down to make the astute genes more and more rare till there's none left. Due to the more cagey's taxes being raised, they will produce less offspring (most of them, none), but with child welfare, encouraging reproduction for the less wealthy, the cloddish will bring more children into the world. We were in our prime a couple of decades ago, but since then, safety procedures have been made fool-proof, and more effective ways of animal control have been executed (of course, I'm not saying that those should be removed, but those WERE nature's way of picking out the Creme De La Crop). I have little hope that genetic engineers will correct this, because hair growth, weight loss, and penis endowment sells better, so no real hope there. If you look around, it's already showing, the white house, the average student test grade, and the fact that a meth dealer announced his profession on his Myspace.

to put it simply, everyone will most likely be dumb-shits by 2400.

I agree with you completely about the lack of natural selection in society/civilization.

The thing about genetic engineers tho... will be that they will charge for their services.
In order to pay for them you have to make good money...
and in order to make good money, you need to have a good job.
And the jobs of the future will be reserved for people who are genetically perfect for the job.

Thank you, had to be said.

I believe that we're just going to kill ourselves off before any drastic changes happen. I mean, look at the past 100 years, do you really think that we won't kill ourselves off in the next thousand?

Actually good sir, Expect the next part of Evolution for Humanity to involve cybernetic implants.

In 200 years when Technology is better most likely there will probably 2 different types of humans, Regular guys like us, And humans with hardcore cybernetic implants to make themselves better smarter and faster then regular guys. Sure It's not natural evolution but it would still be a form of evolution, Only this time the cause of it is not nature, But man made evolution.

I honestly can't see us evolving too much from our appearance as we are now. With so many tools we have removed any need to have anything new added to our bodies. No extra necessarry skills either. Maybe become more intelligent or resistant to disease though.

I think many people can't imagine us evolve any more because they think that we're perfect. That's not true. I can think of many faults of the human race that can be fixed with just a couple hunder thousand years. Girls should definitely grow larger breasts.

This, and we'll probally become weak and very lazy as a species.

Barely any genetic-born muscle because we've grown dependant on advanced steroids that don't shrink your balls.

Barely any endurance because we'll rely on Technology to do anything that could be considered hard.

In other words, stupid Technology like Glasses, Antibiotics, Those stupid scooter things that morbidly obese people use all the fucking time because there disgusting as shit etc. Have destroy our Human Evolution.

We'll probally get more retarded too because of how easy and user-friendly technology is to use. Eventually Robots will be doing everything for us until it get's so bad that everyone in the world is super duper obese with no muscle or barely any intelligience.

Then they'll do the obvious and merciful, kill us all. And humanity ever comes to that, personally I think they have every right to. Like the Dinosaurs died and Humans were born. The Humans died and the Robots was born.

We seem to be gradually getting smaller and less 'built', in comparison to the primates we've evolved from. In the future we're likely to be shorter and have thinner faces, and the more tools and machinery that we invent to do our work for us means that we won't need as much strength so we'll probably end up not being as strong as we are today. But we'll be more intelligent and our bodies will undoubtedly be more efficient at processing what we consume.

I mean think about it, we're an adaptive race that can live almost anywhere, the only thing that is left are Psychic Abilities. There ARE some signs of that too, if you think about it.

Evolution is a much slower process than people think.

I imagine the next step in evolution is that our bodies are going to adjust to fit our alcohol intakes and *maybe* hard drugs intake.
