Flying Polyups came to Earth about 750 million years ago. They possessed the ability to fly and levitate, despite having any indictation of doing so, and leave tell-tell signs of massive footprints in the ground. They were imprisoned in great cities below the Earth's surface, where the entrances were left unguarded and the Polyups can now pass through at will.
Flying Polyups can make themselves invisible at will, so they're hard to detect. There's only one way to control Flying Polyups, and that's Elder Sign.
Elder Sign creates an invisible barrier that Polyups can't pass through. It uses eons old technology that hold the Polyups in place indefinatly. Elder Sign goes to work fast. Imprisoning the Polyups so you can get on with your day.

Do you mean the idea that there is a multiverse or are you talking more about a universe that exists within our own universe or something like that? I think that the former is more likely to exist than the latter, which is all for the better as it probably gives us more room to look for stuff. Any one of those universes out there could have the Elder Gods or at least something like it, as well as a bunch of other stuff beyond our imagination.
