Thus begins the Islamic month of fasting. It started at sunset today and will end the 9th of September (AKA the strongest day). Like last year, I've decided to participate in this despite not actually being a confirmed Muslim yet.

Pretty much, all you're required to do is not eat or drink or have sexual activity at all during sunlight. You are also expected to pay more attention to Muslim virtues and read the Koran, if you're not lazy. At the end, there's a big feast where you gain back all the weight you lost during the month (I lost 15 lbs last year) and have a fun time partying.

Who's all doing this?

btw, this pic will describe how I'll be feeling during the day.

Ramadan.

SHE'S MELTING. SOMEONE GET LETTY.

On topic, I've always wanted to do this, but I don't think I'd be able to pull it off. With my eating patterns, I usually go down to the kitchen every 45~150 minutes for a small snack, so the urge to just go downstairs every so often would be too much.

To lose weight, and go to Muslim heaven (just in case).

But nah, I'm a bit of a Persophile, so I figure, why not? My dad has a problem with me doing this though, cause he's a redneck but I'm like "lolstfu".

My mom likes cooking food and dangling it in front of me. Not fun. :(

Actualy, most of the Muslims I know, gain weight during Ramadan. Mainly for two reasons. 1] their metabolism slows down. 2] They pig out at Ifta and eat massive banquets.

Where I live, all restaurants cater for large scale iftar banquets. Ramadan has become s thing of indulgence, it's sickening. Also, it's enforced by law.
I'm no longer allowed to eat or drink in public during daylight hours. For example, i'm not allowed to have a drink of water in my car or chew chewing gum. The prohibition of water is particularly illogical given that this city is located amongst the desert with temperatures frequently hitting 50 Celsius or 138 Fahrenheit.

If you want to lose weight, exercise.

Why would I participate? Cultural understanding.

I wouldn't count those countries as Islamic, or at least, what they're doing is definitely not Islam.

I'd also like to say that human rights *are* defined in Islam, and they do correspond with that the UN has stated, except Islam has defined that thousands of years ago. Except most of these countries don't actually follow it properly.

Let me stop you there. I live in the UAE. It's not civilised. If I were to be openly homosexual, i'd be in jail. Meanwhile the locals throw kittens out of windows to entertain themselves and cats are trapped in boxes and left to cook in the desert sun.

I wouldn't do ramadan, though. Nah, I even don't partake in the fasting before Easter.

My brother, when he was young and in elementary school had a classmate who was Muslim and she had a show 'n tell kind of thing were she introduced the class to the concept of ramadan. At the end, she brought stuff of the feast in the evening at the end, and apparently they have a whole bunch of tasty stuff they engorge on as a celebration at the end.
