What do you think about the Mafia? Do you think that they are a major problem in the country? How should they be handled? Should they be handled? What do you think? (I'll be honest, I downloaded all these pictures from the Godfather, for various reasons, and I needed something to do with 'em. So there you go!)

I don't believe that there is as big of a mafia problem as there was back in the 30's. Sure, the mafia still exists, but they just don't have the power they used to have.

I agree, Prohibition was the strongest (and beginning) point for the mob. Now in days, you barely hear about them anymore! The most you hear about them is about John "The Dapper Don" Ghotti. But that's about it!

During the great depressinon and prohibation the mafia was a problem. Does the mafia still exist? I thought that there wasn't a mafia anymore.

They do. I know that the police were having problems with a man named John "The Dapper Don" Ghotti. The Mafia's still around, they just aren't as strong as they used to be. But all I really hear about the Mafia anymore is the showings of "The Godfather" on AMC.

I'm not sure how big the Italian mafia is, but there is certainly still organised crime. The really heavy drug and arms deals are handled by cartels. They got a big wig here in Australia recently.

Here's an interesting story I heard, John Ghotti is dying of throat cancer in a Missouri hospital, therefore, he has a sucessor to the title of "most powerful gangster" named Vincent "Chin" Gigante. While Chin is his official nickname, he is called the "Oddfather" because... well... lets just say he's a little eccentric. (By eccentric, I mean he enjoys stumbling around in his pajamas.) Yes, organized crime is still around, and it's scarier than ever!

Russian Mafia is derivitive of the Italian Mafia, Currently Russian Mafia is the most powerful, they are in the unique position to sell military hardware to anyone, with the colapse of communism in Russia much of the military collapsed too leaving even some rather State of The Art equipment at the hands of organised crime.

Italian & Russian mafia both operate in Australia, So too does the Yakusa & the Triads.

My brother had $20,000 stolen by his Financial Advisor, This finabcial advisor had once been the big thing on the money market making all the right deals but it went to his head & he started gambling which got him in debt, He has stolen more than $300,000 from people across Australia(including the company he worked for which has since collapsed) & in Hong Kong, He has had involvement with the Triads, He was recently aprehended in Melbourn after more than a year trying to locate him after he left the country.

The only thing I have heard about the mafia lately is the Gambino crime family that have something to do with the Gold Club (a popular club in Atlanta... I guess I know because I live in Georgia). The leader of the family is being charged with raqueteering(sp?) or something like that. I guess the mafia isn't too suave anymore.

I'd agree with all of these except for green peace. Green peace is a voice organazation, they don't take action physically and don't have any real governing rule as does the government and corperations. I disagree with them many times, many times I agree, I also perfer non-peaceful protests but I don't think that they would be considerd with the rest.

Bewere of Proctor and Gamble... They may test a bunny rabbit colonge on... YOU!

The head of their family is being held not too far from where I live. Their leader is that John Gotti, and he's held in Kansas City. Kansas City used to be a huge mafia city. It's been cleaned up a bit, but according to American Mafia, it still has mob connections. I haven't heard too much lately about the mob in KC, the last known "Mafia Business" there is the "Godfather's Pizza" (They you a offer you can't refuse!!!).

Yeah, go Russian mafia!! :o)
You know they're the most ruthless mob - way worse than the Italians.

in fact, i've met some of them.. there are russian restaurants in philly (and other cities) where russians always party. i've been told that i've met a few from the mob in those restaurants, without knowing they're in the mob.

I think that the problem is fading, mostly due to the focus they've received from the national law enforcement. I think they're still a problem though. Ex: I'm quite sure that a few years ago, a Japanese mob boss briefly owned the Tampa Bay Lightning NHL team. Not even he could make them any good. So, the power is fading, but it's still there.
