I don't understand what's so terrible about having to link your youtube account with an email. It probably helps google with cutting down on the information that it has to store, or some other technical reason. If you don't have a gmail or you don't want to give it your main email (which would be silly because it's the same company) then just make a throwaway one and be done with it. It only takes five minutes.

Calm down it's a website. If it's owned by google than it's fine for them to incorporate some google into it. I connected my google account and my youtube account a long time ago, it's not like they're going to persecute you if you don't do it they just prefer it that way.

I made my first youtube account using gmail which was back in early 2007, last year I went to make a useless back-up account, I used the same gmail for that account as the one I originally (I had also made about 3 other back up account using the same email back in 2008)
Anyway, the back-up account I made last year was connected to my gmail account without me realising it, if I am signed into to gmail, I am signed up into my worthless back-up account, if I sign out on youtube, My email signs out...
Now since that email is in use, I will have to make a new email but now I won't be getting youtube emails (Which is the type of emails I get the most) on my main gmail and will have to use two different emails which adds on to the pain of signing into youtube... FMIL (The added I standing for 'Internet')
